Nav system via Onstar?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have a question. I tried looking through the forum but couldn't find an answer. I have a LTZ, with what I thought had Nav. When I hit the icon it says no route loaded, to contact onstar. Will it work without on star like a reg gps, or do I have to have onstar to make the nav work?

I'm going through the same thing. As you are set up now, on-star is your only nav. And you will not get maps, only voice prompts and turn arrows. From what I am gathering, there may be a way to add factory nav, however it might be cost prohibitive.

The NAV with the maps which you don't have to use OnStar is a $795 option. Did you get that option? If not you have the OnStar turn by turn nav.

I just bought a 2014 GMC SLT and boy and I upset with this Junk crap OnStar Nav system! Totally misleading! I asked specific questions and was told I would have maps and I do not! I need maps for the driving I do especially while on the phone a lot. I usually mute the female voice and watch the map to get to my destination! i am a "sight" person not a "listen to directions guy"! Can't use my phone and follow directions on the map app on the phone at the same time! Can't talk to customers with Google maps cutting in! Not to mention when traffic gets tough in the DFW metroplex I like to look at the maps and skirt around the bad traffic! I bought the truck Friday 2/28 and took delivery Wednesday 3/5. They were tinting the glass adding running boards etc. When I figured out what I had for a nav system on Friday I starting calling to ask for an upgraded truck and they wouldn't help me! Told me to go buy a Tom Tom! So far I have had two dropped routes in the middle of my drive from Onstar and had to call again! Usually have to wait a minute or two or 3 to get someone to answer. Got sent to restaurants that have been closed down for years! Been sent to the wrong location twice and I've only been driving the truck for 4 days! Total junk! I think my buddies are going to shred my man card when they find out I have to call a woman and ask for directions to boot! - All I want to do is type in my destination and go dang it! I want to see a map and follow it! Took a trip a few hours south of Ft. Worth Yesterday and would have liked to have explored the area in route back to town but, the lack of maps heavily hinders exploration! Great truck love the truck but, am so darn angry about the crap nav system I am ready to get rid of the truck already! Bout to take a bath on it and find another Toyota Tundra - shoulda never switched! 3 perfect trucks for many many years and the one time I try a GM I get burned! That nav system is a joke! - total BS! Not what I thought I was spending $46,000 On! Is there anyway I can upgrade my current system or add software to get maps? Can I buy a new system? My dealership told me the only thing they could do was trade trucks for another new and take an $8,000 hit on the new truck I bought plus add cost to upgrade to a higher level truck! What the heck? what a rip! If anybody can help me out I sure would like to see somebody make this right with me!

Garman around 200.00 and up, they are better than any built in GPS I have ever used, in any car or truck. You can take it inside with you too. Oh by the way test out before you buy, so you know what you are getting.

You can add on the "almost factory" kit... Read about it here:

Same here! I just talked to another guy today at the gun shop that thought the same thing! It's amazing how many people I am running across that feel they have been mislead! I wouldn't doubt if we end up seeing a class-action law suit over this. I certainly am not happy!

Hey Firedog, The link either does't work properly or I am doing something wrong or am not a senior member to allow me to look at this link. When I hit your link it says I don't have permission for that???? Can you just tell me where to go to find this? Thanks man! You may have just saved me, my dealership and and GM a from getting in a big fight!

Yeah, I copy/pasted the wrong link from the wrong tab. Here's the correct link:

I would start at the beginning and read it to get it all, then contact Kodiakz if you're interested in pricing.

What I can tell you is that it's VERY simple to install, no programming, and it essentially makes your head unit the one with GPS, even to the dealership.

Agreed I feel mislead as well. On star in my opinion is over priced and worthless. I for one wouldn't consider renewing once it expires. I had a middle of the road 2012 Jeep Cherokee that I traded in on this truck. It had a full nav system. At one time LTZ was top of the line, now it's just three letters. I haven't had any "major" issues that haven't been fixed other then the seat clunk, but knowing what I know now I'm not thrilled about GM. For the amount of money the truck costs, I expected more.

The NAV option ($795) with maps is nice in the GM's. They go 3D in cities to building level...pretty neat. I don't know if they can upgrade the NAV for those that only have OnStar nav. Maybe they can just replace the head unit. That info is probably on the site somewhere.

The On Star Nav system is a rip-off. I can't believe Chevrolet put that system in their vehicles (2015 Colorado)! I blame Chevy on this one though. The system does what it is supposed to do, but it is basically USELESS without the On Star subscription. They are very quick about setting up the system for you so that you can't see how bo-bo that sytem is. You think you have the regular nav system with On Star extras until your subscription runs out, then not only do you not have the On Star extras (expected), but you don't have any nav at all. I do like that you can still open your doors and start your car via the app, but not having maps at all is basically turning your nav system into an oversized radio. I know that may sound petty, but having a nav system to me should be standard, so buying a brand spanking new truck without one really makes me feel cheated. I am a tech junkie, so it is extra disappointing... I think Chevy should unlock the system so that it can allow you to manually type in locations or AT LEAST show you your current position on a map. Obviously the hands-free On Star options and sending locations via phone app should remain under subscriptions. Who would pay for a fancy nav system that you have to pay even more for? Might as well sell the truck and charge people by the mile to use the tires! Are there any petitions going around?? I've been a Chevy fan for many many years, so this topic is a little bit of a shock for me...

How do you not know you don't have nav? I have a 2015 Sierra SLE and I knew it did not have nav, only OnStar. I pushed nav button..and no maps came up. And it should tell you on your window sticker. I looked and checked it out when I was buying my truck. I guess a lot of people assume they have it because they have a nav icon.
