Aftermarket Rear DVD Player

has anyone added an overhead DVD player?

I am going to remove the rear dome light and tap into the wires from it.

There are 4 wires

the black is neg

the white is for constant power

the grey is for the dome light (auto on when the doors are open)

my questions is the yellow wire.

I have no idea what its for.

I can post what I've done when I finish if anyone is interested.

looks like I get to play guinea pig on this one.

a few things first:

I bought a crew cab without the moon roof because I knew I wanted to put a DVD player in and didnt want to deal with something else taking up headliner space

the interior is all black, but the headliner is gray, so I purchased a gray dvd player to match.

I bought a 17 inch screeen with DVD player, which seem hugantic in a truck. (most stock systems are 7-9 inches)

so far I have removed the rear dome light and cut all 4 wires. I will only be using 3 of them (black, white, and grey) I will just leave the yellow wire.

after taking out the dome light, I was able to slide 2 2x4s inside the space between the headliner and the roof. the space is perfect for a 2x4 and a 1x4.

the 2x4s are 10 and 3/8 inches long each and run between the cross members. I was able to liquid nails the 2 2x4s to the roof and the cross members.

I let them dry for a couple days.

This will give me a really solid base to screw the DVD player into since this one is heavier than most.

a couple things when buying a dvd player.

1) You can go about as big as you want. There is a huge space in these trucks

it doesnt matter how big the screen is, when its down it will block your vision out the back window through the rear view mirror.

2) look for one that turns the dome lights on and off automatically when you open and close the doors (should have 3 wires)

3) If you dont want to run any wires, you can just find one that does IR for headphones and / or one with an FM transmitter.

I found an IR - midi cable I would like to try to see if I can use the IR feed and plug it into the console so I don't have run any wires.

I will post pics once I start the install.

Why'd you go this route instead of with screens in the backs of the headrest? Just for the size? I don't want to lose my rear view, but would like to eventually add something for my kids.

I've never been a big fan of the smaller screens on the headrests. I like the bigger screens too.

here are a couple pics of my install

here is a picture with the dome light removed and the area behind the head liner with the 2x4s glued in.

then I lined up the template and drilled 4 holes to hold the metal plate

here is the metal plate attached to the headliner

and a few pics after attaching the main body

The other nice thing is that it keeps the screen a little farther from their face.

My daughter can get car sick from looking at the smallish screens and these flip downs don't seem to bother her.

You can still add the overhead screen with the sunroof...

yes, you definitely can, its just easier if you have all that space to work with and you don't have to rely on the headliner to hold up a heavier bigger screen.

What brand model is that block8head? Also price? I like how it looks to match and is slim.

That one is factory OEM Blu-ray player equipped in the GMC Denali..

Lol of course it is. Im kicking my self for not ordering it now. I couldn't find one to look at and with all the constraints when I ordered I played it safe and didn't order it. Im sure if I ask the price at the dealer they'll promptly tell me to bend over lol. Wonder if I can get the factory parts online cheaper

What model number (GM part) is this? Did you have to order a harness? Where did you order Block8head

there are 3 metal tabs on the side closest to the bed that can be pushed in with a small screw driver.

there are 4 plastic tabs that are on the side closest to the front of the vehicle that are on the back of the headliner.

and there are 2 tabs that go straight up into the ceiling.

so you need to try to get the back end (closest to the bed) down, and then get the front plastic tabs around the headliner. then brute force and ignorance straight down to get it out of the main supports.
