RECALL (5/15/14) Inner Tie Rods

Coming from a current Quality guy from another auto manufacturer, they do have a lot of information about everything about their vehicles. However there is so much data that it tends to be reactive to dig into it for topics like this. And like Luster said, could be before a long weekend or could very easily be the tool was dropped and knocked out of calibration and the next calibration cycle found it and the have to go from cycle to cycle and all those cars are at risk. Like Forrest Gump said… S**T Happens.

I took my company truck into the dealership today after getting the call from GM. The service writer said they needed some clamps for the steering but didn't have the parts. He asked if I could bring the truck back next Thursday or Friday for the repairs. I had to "teach" the service writer about the recall and that I shouldn't be driving the truck. That would have been quite a liability issue if they'd let me leave in the truck and something had happened. I wasn't worried about the truck since it has 18k miles on it and nothing has happened.

I got a truck off their used lot for a loaner. It's a nice 2010 ext cab 2wd but unfortunately it has gaudy chrome crap everywhere. It has chrome door handles, mirror caps, fenderwell trim, rocker panel trim, etc.

This would explain a range of vin # if tool was out of range, but why would the recall cover a span of almost a year.

Tool would be calibrated and tested every day at factory.

Confusing to me about the range.

It probably wasn't GM assembly. Probably a supplier for assembly plants. Service racks come with inner tie rods already attached. So if the supplier built a bunch of bad racks they might go to several different assembly plants.

Good point! I didn't get a call so all is good for me.

None of the recalled trucks are from or assigned to our store.

So more likely a supplier quality control issue. I would have thought the tie rods would be installed afterwards, I guess they come from supplier attached, makes sence now.

Supplier has serious quality control issues, as steering rack and tie rods are critical components and should never leave the factory without a secondary check built into the system!

Wait suppliers have issues too? LOL! It very well could be any number of reasons I'm just glad nobody on here got hurt because of it. Loss of steering is my nightmare when I drive any pre-street software changes.

Just checked my vin and my truck wasn't part of the 477 however in January (4weeks after getting the truck) I noticed a pop in the steering. Took it to the dealer and they said my tie rod broke my rack. They said they didn't know how it happened but that it was a miracle my wheel never came off. Either the systems showed that mine had been replaced, or there are more then 477. It could be that mine just happened to be a fluke.

I have a GMC Sierra 1500 2010. Had complete loss of steering veered off the road into telephone pole and suspect tie-rod defect. Tire was not flat. Could there be more vehicles than the 477 they are re-calling? We're still alive but the truck is gone. Not sure what else would cause loss of steering other than the tie-rod. I'm calling GM to report it. This happened to me June 29th, 2014. I'm going to mentioned it to my insurance adjuster.

You need to report this noise and the fact the tie rod broke and your vin wasn't on the recall list.

The nhtsa needs to know as well as your insurance, so they can have our trucks checked now.

My truck is making a loud thunk coming from the steering area now too.

Here is a link someone else posted on youtube of the noise I have also.

Mine is noticeable when steering wheel turned all the way to right, and backing up and then braking.
