RECALL (5/15/14) Inner Tie Rods

Just saw this too, mostly affects cars but here is what can affect our trucks:

477 units of the 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, and a few of the brand new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV to fix a for a tie-rod defect that could lead to a crash. With this condition, the tie rod can separate from the steering rack and a crash could occur without prior warning. The company is asking owners of these new vehicles to have them taken by flatbed to their dealer, where the inner tie rods will be inspected for correct torque, and, if necessary, the steering gear will be replaced.

Chevy owners go here and check your VIN: https://my.chevrolet.com/web/portal/_warrantyandrecalls

Right now my truck is not indicated to be affected by this recall.

That's cool so everybody stop driving now, who is going to pick us all up. It would be nice to know which serial numbers. Only 477 how do they know. I think Im going to wait a while before I sell my other truck.

Thank you

You're welcome. I used that site to find out about the transmission line recall before notices even went out. That recall was already released in the news so from what I can tell if the news already knows about the recall, then the site I linked to should already have the VIN information for the affected vehicles. I may check it the next few days as well just to be certain. But 477 is a very small number of trucks.

I can handle most any recall but not being able to steer, the idea of that are what nightmares are made of.

The article from the OP says, "Truck owners were notified by phone, overnight letter and via the in-vehicle communication system OnStar that they shouldn't even drive their trucks to dealers for repairs. GM will send a flatbed truck to pick up the vehicles, which include some 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and some 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs".

So they already notified the truck owners...

Ok I just read the full recall it is for inner tie rods not fastened torqued off properly.

How in the h*ll can it only be 477 trucks over almost a year of production? This makes no logic to me unless the tool torquing off this part.....which would be a DC tool (electric drive torque wrench) had 477 faulty torque registered readings, and somehow through shabby training and Quality Control failure, managed to get out of the plant.

I would only suspect someones tie rod seperated and the dealer must have noticed it was stripped out.

GM must have looked back at the build sheet and vin# and had a bad torqued reading from that tool that vin# that build day. I would guess there was 477 failed readings from that tool that got logged. What makes no sense to me is why only 477 over a year of production? Why weren't they found before they left the plant? They would have built 10,000s of trucks each month or more. Was the failed part due to failed torques that someone did not fix!

Now if so, i would only guess people there is way more out there with tierods not torqued off as we speak!

Remember our vibration issues there might be a connection there! I would say folks have a quick look at the tie rods and connections to steering rack.

just my 2 cents and only saying a possibility.

^^^ I'm betting the 477 were built on a Friday before a holiday weekend. Not a joke. It happens.

Recall covers a period of just less then a year!

How do they know only these 477 have issues over almost a year of production?

They must have data to track only these vin# over a year for these steering components!

Supplier data or in house data tracking over a year, must be torque readings no good from vin# to a tool that is logged.

otherwise one would have to be a genie to know that these have bad torques without data logging abilities.

Just saying

Coming from someone who worked for GM and at one point for a supplier for GM I can tell you GM knows everything about every part that goes into the vehicles.

I just got a call from my boss that my company truck is affected by this recall. He neglected to tell me that I should stop driving the truck. We'll see what the dealership says. I knew it was an important recall since he was calling me about it.
