What gas do you use in you 2014 gmc sierra?

That had to be a mistake, raise it a dollar exactly? Hmmm? I'd call them out on that. My experience was they showed one price on the board and another on the pump. The pump was higher of course. I told them to either change the price at the pump or I go somewhere else....even though I couldn't for e85. They told me no so I walked. Just as I got to my truck the manager came running out and got the priced changed...sweet.

I actually did go inside and ask why it had jumped so much in price on the pump and was it a mistake. The guy told me ethanol had one up for a short period but they had bought it at that time. They have huge tanks and mix their own fuel. He said that when they sell off the stuff they have the price will go back down. I can't imagine anyone paying that so it will be a long time before the price drops there. I told him I'd be back when the price was competitive with the station a few miles down the road. It's a little less convenient but I go a bit further and get my "fix" of E85 for $2.99. It's worth the drive for the results it gets.

91 with 10% ethanol has 10% ethanol. 91 with no ethanol is ethanol free. Technically the ethanol free should net the best mileage, while you might see better performance from the E10.

So, you wish 87 octane was $0.01 less than what it is?

Yes, are you ok ? All I was saying that u didn't understand I'm paying the same as he's paying for 93..

I run Costco regular here in southern California. It's cheap and it burns. My last two trucks went a total of 350,000 + miles on it and whatever other cheap gas I could find while traveling on hunting trips. Neither ever had an engine problem.

just ran 93 for 2 weeks, did 3-4 tanks. terrible mileage compared to 87 octane. i ran 87 on a long trip almost a full tank and got 22mpg doing 70mph. 6.2L

not sure why, but my truck hates 93 octane. maybe its the ethanol in it, but 87 has less power but better mileage.

Been emailing back and forth with Blackbear tuning about getting a tune done. They recommend running at lease 89 octane in the 5.3. See the quote below from my email with Justin at Blackbear. I will be more than likely using 89 octane from now on with the tune. I probably wont use E85 anymore because of the crappy mileage and its overpriced by me. Paid 3.72 for E85 last weekend, and 3.55 the weekend before that! Meanwhile since then regular gas has dropped below 3.70! The combination of an 89 octane and a tune from Blackbear, I'm sure I will see similar performance gains like when using E85 but with the gas mileage of regular gas.

The 5.3L does not *require* higher than 87, but it cannot burn 87 efficiently, ever. We've encountered thousands of them (2007+) and they all, every single one, ping on 87 octane due to the high compression ratio. The 2014s are slightly better than the previous model due to the direct injection, but are still not happy on 87. As a result, 89 octane will almost always pay for itself and will definitely be more consistent and more responsive. 91+ octane is not a necessity, especially not with factory tuning, but 89 octane is a win-win.

I understand from doing some checking around that most people do the tune for the differents in the trans. tune most tunes in the 14 give you about 15 HP. So if your not unhappy with the trans, E85 gives you 25 HP you keep your warranty. You can buy a lot of E85 for what a tune cost. Not trying to piss anyone off, but I need more to risk the warranty, I don't think the truck trans performs that bad to do a tune for it. Now if I go with a super charger again that gain is worth the warranty.

Totally understandable. I know I might not see the gains in HP from the tune as I do while using E85, but it will be noticeable for sure. I would really like to clean up the shifting, turn off AFM, reduce torque management and whatever else they do.

if you decide to try e85, do you have to run the previous gas to almost empty?

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
    • 286,740 Mile Services   8/6/2026   New AC Compressor. Refrigerant oil and dye, evacuate and charge system.  New exhaust system from cat back.  New Iridium plugs plus replace #3 coil Repair/rewire headlamp wiring (passenger side) and replace all forward bulbs. Polish lenses of both assemblies.  Pull rear rotors, clean and adjust parking assembly. Inspect, clean and grease front calipers. Check pads and shoes.  4 wheel power bleed of brake system. Dot 4 Reset idle speed 50 rpm higher New Serpentine belt.    Will need new pads in the rear in about 5K more miles.    Tax Title and License out the door just short of a grand.    AC clutch had bitten the dust. 1 year warranty on the pick and save replacement. Thing will make a Polar Bear cry Uncle.  He spent quite some time on the wiring. It was in the harness and he does nothing half. I got off cheap. I have considerable more light down the road. Sylvania Silver Star replacements.  Gas seal between the porcelain and shell of plug #3 was blown, cooked the coil. That was the cold miss.  Love the new exhaust. I can sneak into the neighborhood again.  Nice to have a working parking brake again. Belle Tire never got it done. That was disappointing.    This was one of her bigger bills and still way cheaper than a payment even given the oil consumption. This thing cost me under a hundred a month in repairs and normal routine costs. What is my incentive to replace it? 🤔
    • hello I recently bought a 2012 gmc 1500 with a 5.3 and have a AFM disabler on it I'm interested in doing a cam but I'm worried if I remove the AFM system I will fail smog does anyone have info if they are able to detect that or a work around to it (not talking about hot smogging) please let me know thank you
