What gas do you use in you 2014 gmc sierra?

Haha! Yeah, I am baffled by some of these mileage figures. I'm extremely easy on the gas pedal and I'm averaging 17.0 combined city/highway (one MPG better than my '13 LT was doing). Best I've ever done for a 50 mile stretch ALL highway was 20.0 (with a tailwind)

 

Unless they are doing all highway cruising at 55mph??? I don't even know if I could do those numbers doing 55!

 

To stay on topic... 5.3L running 87 octane.

 

 

Comparing two very different vehicles.

 

You have a Crew Cab Silverado LTZ with 22" wheels, lift/level, molded mudflaps, power steps, and several other goodies. All things I don't have. And IMO, all things that do not help in the gas mileage department.

 

I have a Double Cab Sierra SLE with 18" wheels, no lift/level, no molded mud flaps, not too many other goodies. IMO the Sierra with it's contoured front end is more aerodynamic than the Silverado, and the air dam is different in design as well.

 

Your Crew Cabs and several components were built in a totally different location than the Double Cabs and some components, at different times as well.

 

These trucks will get better gas mileage when they are well broken in. Mine didn't switch in to the V4 mode nearly as much for the first couple thousand miles. Would not stay in the V4 mode on the expressway over 62 MPH either for the fist 1500 miles or so. Now it will stay in V4 up to at least 75 MPH as long as it is not going up a hill or hitting a strong headwind.

 

I do get better gas mileage heading East in the afternoon with the prevailing wind than I do in the mornings heading West into the prevailing winds. Everything is up to operating temp faster in the afternoon as well.

 

Not all gas is created equally, either. Only use Top Tier here.

When I found out the there was HP to be gain running E85 it was a no brainer for me. I was running 93 anyway cause I notice a improvement in performance. When I switch to E85 I notice that too, only loss 3 miles per gallon in town.

I use 93 in my 6.2, but I have always used 93 regardless of motor. Then, only Chevron, BP, or in emergencies, Shell. I still remember in '63, as a senior in high school, I had a '57 Ford with a 292 and used only "high test" Amoco. It was the only "white gas" on the market and as teenagers we thought it was the magic elixir. That's how I got married to PB (used to be Amoco). Then in the mid 80's I began owning Mercedes and all the gurus, technicians, and factory reps were constantly recommending Chevron due to the "techron" added. I began using it and could tell the difference when I did, over a period of time. That's how I got married to Chevron. In addition, I have owned Vettes since '97 and always used Chevron or BP only. I have never had any fuel transfer problems that are common with the C5 and C6 vettes.

 

I have heard every story imaginable from everyone imaginable, including petroleum engineers concerning the mythical advantages of using 93 octane. I have never wavered and will always use 93. Back in the day, we didn't talk 93 or 87...it was always "high test" or "regular." I'm sure there are many others on here who can relate to that. I eventually was forced to start using the 93 octance term because it got to the point where younger generations, in their 30s and 40s didn't understand what I meant by "high test."

 

Just thought I would share some personal history to provide the whole story because very few folks are as eccentric as I am about the fuel I use. I don't buy fuel for gas mileage and I don't drive to preserve it. At 68 my right foot is still as heavy as it was at 21, maybe more so if I remember correctly. Besides, the 6.2 sounds awfully good!

The numbers don't always jive at the pumps when I fill up the tank. They have been slightly better, and as much as 1/2 MPG worse for the overall. That is not always an exact science either, because some pumps shut off earlier than others.

Other thing is that the pump may not always give you the same amount of gas that it says it is. So you may be getting 22 gallons when you are paying for 22.5 or 23 gallons. In my 02 yukon it had a "gallons used" screen. I would reset it every time I filled up. I would check the avg MPG screen on the truck. The inboard computer would always agree. Sometimes rounding, say if it was hand Calc 10.45, then the computer showed 10.5 mpg. But the gallons used and refuel at the pump never agreed. With the fuel used always being lower by atleast .5 gallons.

 

 

So my belief is that the truck DIC may be more correct than we think. Now I'm not saying that it's exact. But I don't think it's off by the 1+ MPG (ie, DIC shows 16 mpg while hand Calc shows 15 mpg).

yesterday I decided to fill the truck up with E85 for the first time. I have to say the increase in power is definitely noticeable. I cant give a fair comparison to gas mileage yet because I was driving into a 25mph headwind yesterday which would kill mileage even with regular gasoline. But so far after mostly highway driving around 70-75 mph after about 200 miles my tank average is 15.6 mpg. NOT BAD imho even fighting that 25mph headwind.

 

i was driving to visit family yesterday for Fathers day which is why i decided to just try the E85. But it isnt exactly convenient for me to fill up with normally. But I think ill go out of my way to fill up with E85 for the next few tanks to get a good feel for the MPG.

I was getting my E-85 at a station nearby. They raised the price from 3.02 to $4.02. I was not happy. The extra power got me hooked, then they raised the price to way more an even premium. I found another place about 5 miles out of my way where it was $2.99. After running it for a few months now I don't think I could go back to E-10. The extra spunk in the truck is worth going out of my way for. I have gotten 18 plus mpg on the highway, and I'll take that.

 

I'll be curious to see how you do and what you think.

Dang thats ridiculous that they raised it so much! The stations near me are all around 2.82-2.99.

That had to be a mistake, raise it a dollar exactly? Hmmm? I'd call them out on that. My experience was they showed one price on the board and another on the pump. The pump was higher of course. I told them to either change the price at the pump or I go somewhere else....even though I couldn't for e85. They told me no so I walked. Just as I got to my truck the manager came running out and got the priced changed...sweet.

I have been running E85 mostly a couple times I was getting ready for a trip so I stop to top off. I wasn't paying attention and put in 93 gas in about seven gallons. My gas mileage went up in an instant and stayed that way thru the tank. My performance seemed to act like E85. Is that possible or my imagination? It went from 14 in town to 18 in town like does on 93 gas. Is it possible to have the best of both? I did it twice same results.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
