Better gas mileage?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have a 2014 gmc Sierra with the 5.3, when I bought this truck I was not towing anything. Know I'm towing a 18' trailer and 2 rzr. Well gas mileage is horrrrrrible to say the least. I know it's a pretty heavy load but can't be to bad I'm averaging 8mpg at best. I've only had truck 6 months so I don't want to trade it in just yet. Build sheet says gear ratio is 3.42 it is the 2wd z71 package.

My question is what can I do for better gas mileage? Intake and exhaust ? Thanks

pretty sure thats what you're going to get, and its probably better than almost any truck. the atv's are creating a lot of wind drag. intake and exhaust aren't going to net much mpg, at the most even if you spent 1 grand you might get 1-2 mpg.

8 is pretty low. What might help a lot is build a fairing for the nose of the trailer.

Get it tuned. Datalog while towing and normal driving. A good tuner can read it and make changes to fit your driving demands. Tunes are usually the most bang for the buck for increasing power and economy.

Search tunes on this site for more post than you will want to read discussing tunes. Do it now while truck is new and it has more time to pay for itself.

Good luck.

That's an awful big drop for the light load your towing. I get better towing a poontoon boat and that's just like towing a parachute. I tow my Rhino and mileage drops a few mpg nothing like from 20 to 8. How fast are you towing and what kind of roads? Any hills, mountains or traffic? I'm sorry but I think it something that your doing wrong to get the mileage to drop that much. Are you towing in drive or do you use the tow/haul switch?

I'm not doing anything wrong, towing in drive with tow hall on, 75 mph speed limit and good roads some elevation changes but nothing crazy. I know each rzr has to weigh about 1500 each plus trailer.

Towing at 75 mph is gonna suck some fuel. Doubt theres much you can change.

Agreed.. OP, drop it down to 60-65 and see what type of MPGs you pull out of it

I agree here. Towing or empty there is a sweet spot. That sweet spot varies truck to truck and owner to owner. For example for my on the highway while empty my sweet spot is 78 MPH. Engine spinning 2k and pulling about 17.5 MPG by the DIC. Spend some time experimenting.
