Didn't get the housing out. Couldn't get a grip with the 4" exhaust in the way. Ultra Black in the cable fitting hopefully will fix it.

Was looking around at 700-R4 transmissions online, like the TCI Super Street Fighter. Wondering why the previous owner didn't put that in. Lower first gear, built in OD, less complicated, and cheaper(a GV OD costs over 2K alone, plus the transmission, while the TCI SFF costs 3300.

Most likely because the 700R4 won't hold up to the power that a GV unit will.

 

Even a built 700r4 or 4L60 just doesn't like a lot of power. Especially if you like to use the power.

 

I know everyone has a story about their brothers uncles friend had a 8 sec car with a 700R4, but the design just doesn't handle power well.

I know, but a GV is kinda quirky. Mine randomly shifts and then 5 minutes later works fine again. GV says that can happen if car voltage get over 12.2 volts or under 11, then the ecu must be rebooted, by unhooking a wire on the trans while the car is running. Better have a perfect electrical system. My battery died which is probably what started my issue. Previous owner decided to run exhaust close to transmission, and then dump it at drive shaft. Going to be a pain to get to that wire that is an inch from 4" pipes, and not breathe, then put it back.

 

I did it with the keybin the On position, the GV shouldn't know it isn't running, since the only thing it really connects to is the speedo as far as I can see in the wiring(didn't go over them in detail yet)

 

Then again, my battery is regularly unhooked and the problem just started, so who knows.

 

The TCI SFF is rated for 1000, so my 700-800 will be fine if I ever do it.

Put the thread sealant on my mount, takes 72 hours to cure.

 

And then I realized after spit shining the plugs I didn't deep clean the threads that the plugs screw into. Hope the shop towel I stuffed in there absorbed enough! I doubt there was much in there. If not I'll just do it again.

Got the fluids I wrote about a few days ago and changed them.

 

The rear end fluid was still purple so it was pretty fresh. The gauges are only 3600 miles old so I assume most of the drivetrain is around that also. GV fluid was nasty for under 4k miles, which is considered normal.

Need to figure out what size of rubber hose is on a section of fuel line from the high performance pump to the standard metal lines. It's a push on my the looks of the bulges in it where it goes on the fittings. Not that measure a line diameter is hard, I'm just tired and saving that for tomorrow!

Dyno tomorrow. Here hoping the previous owner is right(800hp) and I'm wrong (700~hp).

 

Lets hope we arent both wrong

At the dyno, waiting for the "the [dyno] guys" to get there. Dumped in 5 gallons of 100, think I had around 4~ gal of 91 in it so, should have over 100 during the pulls

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
