I am curious, what about your truck, how is it getting better?

My transmission shift changes have gotten longer between shifts. Wrong thread to have a conversation about it, I'll send you a PM.

Since you mentioned the roof bow "fix"

 

Think 2 people here had it done only to have the bows come undone shortly thereafter

 

More recent posters have reported that dealers now say they are waiting for a solution from GM, so seems like GM "pulled" the roof bow repair and (hopefully) are trying to find a permanent solution

If some people are more sensitive than others to these issues, I'm curious if those who've noticed it have ever driven in one that doesn't do it? I drove probably 10 Tahoes and Yukons before I bought the one I own, which is the only one that didn't exhibit the really obnoxious noises. It still booms (flick a woofer) at low speed but that seems inherit in all of them.

I test drove around 10 before getting mine, same thing found the one where booming was the least

 

I've now been in about 30-40 between the 6 variants, and I have felt the boom in every single one

6 dampers on my exhaust fixed the 'flick a woofer' booming at low speeds.

Admittedly, I haven't spent too much time under the truck, but I don't believe our trucks have any exhaust dampers from the factory. 6 dampers were added to mine and the low speed booming over gravel roads, snow covered roads and other small bumps is gone. No part numbers were provided on my invoice.

 

Buffeting was fixed by getting wheels/tires under 15lbs RFB.

 

Vibrating was fixed with a rear-axle replacement. Mine was mild compared to some of the videos from our pickup cousins.

 

I just rolled over 30,000km [~18,000 miles] and really enjoy the Yukon. It took some effort to get this point, but it was worth it.

6 dampers on my exhaust fixed the 'flick a woofer' booming at low speeds.

I saw your earlier post but couldn't quite make out the dampers. Was this something the stealership whipped up? Could it be DIY? I'd love to eliminate the booming. I think the first step is to rid myself of those made-from-stone Continental tires.

Are you saying the pick up trucks have these problems? I was going to give up on the Yukon xl and go with a 2500 HD. Do they also have a lot of the same problems? thanks.

This last week was out in the middle of nowhere in Arizona by Kingman. Running 80-90 mph. The truck has a BAD vibration at this speed that I've never noticed at normal 60-70 mph. Has to be something to the Buffeting on the freeway.

 

I'm at my wits end. Almost ready to spend stupid money for a out dated 2016 Landcruiser. Just to get rid of all these cabin sounds.

The GM field engineer installed them at my dealership, just outside Toronto. Other than "install 6 exhaust dampers", there are no other details or part numbers on my invoice. I'll try to snap some pictures, though I don't have access to a lift and my Yukon is out of town for a few days.

 

To be clear, the dampers fixed the "booming" noise experienced when driving slowly over gravel or snow roads and other bumps. I once believed that "booming" was related to the "buffeting", but it wasn't, at least in my case.

 

booming: fixed by adding 6 exhaust dampers

buffeting: fixed by getting each tire under 15 lbs RF [i did this twice; factory Conti's and my snow duty ATs]

vibrating: fixed with a rear axle replacement

 

The Yukon has been super smooth, right up to 100mph ever since the work was completed in March.

 

@John: I believe all these issues are specific to the 1/2 ton trucks only. This is based on reading nearly every discussion on the matter and the survey results that I've been compiling. I'd triple check before making a move.

I've always agreed the booming and buffeting are two separate issues. I've been dealing with this MESS since Sept 2014.

 

Like to fix this Escalade for its the best looking SUV available IMPO, but looking for a suitable replacement asap. The 2017 Landcruiser is going to be even uglier then it already is :( the infinity is terrible, rover isn't the answer for reliability concerns.

 

Wish GM would just fix this problem so we could enjoy the vehicles we paid good money in good faith for.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
