2014 Sierra rear end leak.....

Recommended Posts

I bought this truck yesterday...2014 Sierra all terrain with the 6.2 and today I notice a strong smell of gear oil. Low and behold my entire tailgate and rear of my truck is covered in oil and there is two decent size oil spots underneath the diff.. Looks like it's coming from the pinion seal and axle seals....is this a common problem or is this just something in a long line of troubles to come?

Thanks guys.

I never had an issue with my 2007. I did crawl under my buddy's 2010 Sierra the other day to check out the difference in the exhaust systems between the 2014's and the GMT900's and he had a significant leak where his drive axle enters the rear differential. I'm sure it's just a seal that can be easily fixed but do it soon because driving without enough gear oil will only lead to damage. It's covered under warranty so take it in and it won't cost you more than your time.

mass produced vehicle ....things like this happen. Shouldn't be any indication of what's to come. Take it to the dealer... I'm sure they can get you fixed up quick

Took the truck in this morning and just as I suspected it was a pinion seal leak. They have the parts on order and should be fixed tomorrow morning. I understand that they are fixing the problem but this is still extremely frustrating for a $53,000 truck with less than 200 miles...

Jesh, it is a mass produced vehicle. Cost of the vehicle has nothing to do with it. There are probably 40+ parts in the diff alone and not all of them are made by GM. That is why there is a warranty in place.

I understand that it is a mass produced vehicle, but you cannot tell me that you would be very happy if you just bought a truck and it started doing this or any leak with less than 200 miles.

These trucks are like many mass produced items... like a new TV... If you are going to have problems, it's generally in the beginning.

Not very common. But get it fixed quick so you dont burn up your rear end. Dealer should fix under warranty.

it's being fixed currently. Looks like it was a bad pinion seal according to the service department.

Mass produced, really, that's an excuse for the rear diff input seal to leak on a truck with 200 miles on it? Are you guys kidding me, cost of the vehicle has nothing to do with it. So the more you pay for a vehicle should have nothing to do with the quality of workmanship? Whatever......Lol

Edit: if I owned an auto manufacturing company I would hope all my customers were like you guys, because I would never be at fault or lacking in quality of workmanship.

Edit again: and who cares if GM made all the parts in the diff. There are only two manufactures that sold me a warranty when I bought this truck, GM and Goodyear, you don't see the suppliers or vendors going on TV and pumping up there products by saying as seen in the 2014 Silverado. Vendors and suppliers have nothing to do with it.

My point was the same thing could have ... and does happen as much with Ford, Dodge , etc

I agree, anything can happen to any vehicle at anytime, but thats not what you said.

If the customers don't expect more from auto manufactures while they continue to ridiculously raise prices then KIA should come out with a pickup and we'll all get one.

I would have them spec out the ring and pinion gear also as many customers are having entire rear end assembles replaced currently for the shake issue. Have you been able to drive this at highway speeds yet to confirm you do not have any vibration issues?
