Dark smoke under heavy throttle??????

I noticed on 3/4 to full throttle what appears to be grayish to black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I can't tell exactly what color because of the window tint, but it seems to be a pretty fair amount of a smoke cloud. Has anybody else noticed this???? I'm wondering if the carbon build up from direct injection is sooting up the exhaust. I also notice quite a bit of carbon build up on the chrome exhaust tip. What's you guys opinion???

Just a product of Direct Injection. My truck does it. My last DI car did it too. When you get on the throttle, it dumps fuel into the pistons (because the stock tuning is rich from the factory). The extra fuel is the dark smoke you see.

 

My exhaust tips are sooty too. As will be everyone on this site.

 

As long as its just a quick puff/burst of smoke its fine. And as long as its dark.

 

Blue smoke would mean burning oil, white smoke would mean burning coolant. Which would be bad. Dark smoke is just excess fuel. And these trucks are tuned rich from the factory to prevent a lean combustion situation.

^ What he said. Ive bought a few 2014s and they all do it to some degree. Black smoke = rich. kinda like the old DPer Holly carbs. I just wish they didn't tick like a time bomb. Cant stand to go thru the drive thru at the bank.

I figured that's what it was, but it's hard to while driving. I may get my wife to drive while I follow her just to see for myself. As long as it's normal, I won't worry with it. Thanks for the info guys.

Normal as others said. All GDI motors do it to some degree. Seems like it's worse if the engine hasn't been worked hard for a bit- like if you do a ton of stop and go driving then romp on it merging into the freeway.

90% of mine is in town, so it makes sense it's a little heavier than normal.
