fluid change

I am about to refill the fluid in my 4l80e. I'm going to drop the pan and change the filter but I am slightly confused on the filling procedure. From what I understand, you put in 4 courts before starting the truck and then once it's up to temperature, you add the last two courts. Is this correct?

When I did my truck, and a friends, I put in enough to show on the dipstick (about 4 quarts.) Then started up the truck, got it up to operating temp, then would cycle the gear shift through all gears, then check level. I then added fluid a little at a time and keep checking until all fluid added is up to temps and showed "Full HOT" on the dipstick.
