Ok, I gave in and purchased 5 more gigs of data for my truck. Plus I found out there is no app shop for the 2015's as of yet.

use your iphone or android hotspot and stop paying onstar. they are ripping you off. you can use 20gb a month just streaming pandora if you use it a lot.

AT&T was smart, since I have unlimited data on my cell phone it doesn't allow me to use my phone as a Hotspot.

thats not true. it just depends on your phone. at&t locks basic phones, but if you jailbreak or root, you can hotspot to your hearts content.

And once they kick you off the unlimited they will let you use it as a hotspot without doing anything extra. They just want to be able to charge you for it. If you have an Android, go the play store and download, FoxFi. It works without rooting your phone.

I would never pay for wifi through OnStar. Just as other have stated it is far cheaper to do it directly through your phone carrier. Lucky I am still on an old unlimited data play with verizon so I can eat all the data I want. Needless to say I'm never giving up that plan!

If you have an unlimited data plan the carriers won't let you tether and the apps that have been suggested don't work according to the reviews. Some carriers will kick you off the unlimited data plan if they catch you trying to use it as a hotspot. If you don't have unlimited, you can use your phone as a hotspot, but the signal isn't as strong and you use the same amount of data.

yes we are in agreement, but when you get a wifi hotspot from your carrier you are not using your phone. You add a line and then get the wifi hotspot, the hotspot will supposedly have a stronger signal than trying to crack your phone to be wifi.

If your phone has the ability to generate a wifi signal (pretty much all newer smartphones do) then yes, it is the same. But some carriers/plans will charge extra for the function.

i used to work for at&t. you can use your phone, or a dedicated wifi hotspot on their plans. again, they only lock the phones that they sell or can control, like an at&t locked iphone. Its very easy to get around this. i use a galaxy s5 g900f international version on cricket. i'm not unlimited data, but you can't beat 35 bucks a month taxes included for unlimited talk, text, and 1gb. hell 45 a month for 10gb of data.

 

do yourself a favor and stop paying at&t, verizon, or sprint and look into MVNO's. a lot of times the money still goes to the carrier, but it makes a big statement when the money is coming in from aio or boost or straight talk instead of their big name brand.

I just wanted to provide you with some clarification. OnStar's data is provided by AT&T. Therefore, you could either purchase data directly through OnStar, or add your OnStar system to an existing AT&T account as an additional device for $10 a month.
