Visual quality on backup camera!

Its not that good, if your comparing to past models or other maybe it is. But if you take it for what it is, its not that good.

I don't know about you guys but I don't watch movies through my rear view camera, if i did I might be a bit disappointed.

The picture quality works well for seeing things behind me and not running over then though.

I would like to get some resolution numbers on the rear camera. The screen resolution is fine so its the camera that is really low res. I know Rostra makes a tailgate camera plug and play kit for the 14-15 Sierra/Silverados, but they don't say what resolution it is either.

I wondered if being wireless was a reason but I see others that have had other trucks have had better.

So the camera is wireless? Is the receiver in the camera itself or is the camera connected to a receiver?

It's not wireless. There is a cable that runs out the bottom of the tailgate and then under the bed to a harness. I know because when I got my bed liner sprayed in they forgot to plug it back in- no camera.

id say its like 180x240 or soemthing like that. i have a 640x480 and its a lot better looking than this backup camera.

yea, looking at prices online, a camera like that would cost right around $20. Probably cost GM less since they bought in large quantity. Seems like such a silly thing to skimp on, its not like the screen is on the rear view mirror. That resolution just does not look right on an 8" screen.

I agree. But what happens when they are building a project is each division has a budget to stay in spending 10 more bucks times 100k more units equals how much money?? Then have to figure out how much of that price can they pass onto the consumer, but yet keep their price point where they want it, to either make money/being competitive with other makers. Im sure theres a lot of products where one could only 50 more bucks here and there, and we would be looking at trucks that cost twice as much. More than likely money and effort was spent on the screen or other parts. Also might come down to contractual obligations they had in the past, or the mere fact they bought one part from one company means they couldnt buy a better camera from another. We will never know.

Rather than discussing how GM spends their money....... Has anyone bought a higher resolution camera that successfully produced a higher quality image on the stock GM 8" screen?
