My Wheel Project

I've been taking guff about my 'old man' wheels from my neighbor ever since I got my truck in the spring. The thing is; he's right. I am an old man. Him too. smiley_quickdraw.gif

So, I have been looking for wheels for about 6 months now. I found some here and there that I liked ok. But nothing stood out to me except these.

I didn't like the black ones nor the metallic gray ones. I wanted chrome.

So, I've been busy. I bought the wheels a week ago, fit checked them on the front and drove them to the plater. The wheels got stripped and polished, then copper plated, polished some more, then nickel strike and chrome plated (triple chromed)

I have some work to do yet. The faux beadlock bolts need to go back in. I'm still on the fence on the colored beadlock ring. Maybe. But I really like these.

I'm not exactly a big fan of beadlocks unless they're real which I think it's only a couple real beadlocks that are DOT approved (could be wrong, just last I read). I think your truck would look better with black rims since it's a white truck, but I like full chrome also.

SSG,

I appreciate your comments. I'm just not a black wheel fan at all. There are no beadlock wheels legal to use on the highway, unless they are like the Ford Raptor wheels are DOT approved where the real beadlock ring is not installed and the tire is run inside the bead of the wheel. Just my put, but about all of the truck wheels that have some bead detail, in some way are a play on the real beadlocks.

I stand corrected. The Hutchinson internal beadlock wheels are DOT approved.

They're out there but they use a different system I believe than the regular off-road beadlock. Hutchinson and BAD Wheels Inc have DOT approved beadlocks and that's just from the 1st page from a quick google search.

I stand corrected. Still, I don't need a beadlock.

I wouldn't either, only if I had something that wasn't even legal to be on the street. I think those rims look good as is without the fake beadlock rings.

Kind of a backhanded compliment, but a compliment. :D I'll live thru the fake beadlock. They kinda grew on me. But this black wheel craze...I don't get it. From 20 yards they could be steel wheels and nobody would know. Black wheels just disappear. When the black wheel fad is over, the wheel companies will celebrate. They're competing with a spray can of bbq paint right now.

I don't follow fads unless I actually like it. I just think black rims look best on black or white trucks. Any other color it doesn't matter. That's no different than the color match phase which you've done and you've done it because you like the look, not because it's a fade. When I was younger I was in my chrome phase and wanted everything chrome. Now some chrome looks good and is tasteful, but I don't like much anymore.

White with black looks sharp on some cars, my truck is white and I really like how the AT 20" wheel looks on it since it is gun metal in color. The Vette we are thinking of building will be white with the forged black wheels, it really looks stunning on the new Vette.

I live in southern California. It is the birthplace of most vehicle fads. Aftermarket accessorized vehicles are as common as toenail fungus. We all follow fads. Some more than others. It's all personal taste evolved thru emersion in the fads, in the end, especially with something as ubiquitous as a car/truck wheel. Most things related to styles that are retailed are all about fads. Wheels very much included. I've seen wheel fads come and go over the last 4-5 decades and have my personal taste pretty well established. I just can't get into black. It just looks ... blaaah-k to me.

not a fan of fake bead lock wheels. I would keep what you have or get some OEM 20s over the ones you posted above.

Got it. But, I don't like the ghetto look of 20's on a 4x4. These are my choice for my ride.

I have never had anything but black wheels for the past 10 years. Even 10 years ago when I had dodge duallies, I pulled the chrome simulators off and sported black wheel underneath. I'm not of fan of any chrome vehicle parts. For me, it's just hard to clean. I think it's also more of a generation thing. My uncle gives me heck and vice versa.

Different generations, different fad followings. :nopity: I'd say: "I have chonies older than that", but I'm afraid it might be true.
