Will they ever put a diesel in a 1500?

That was back in the early 80 models. Mostly in military issue trucks & blazers.

 

Yep, drove a bunch of them. In the winter, some were worthless.

 

And yes, they were the 6.2 L.

We had one of those in a old oldsmobile 4 door, engine didn't last long at all and had gm replacement put in. Never really got any mileage, The neighbor we got it from also had a propane mid-size Ford LTD 2.3L, was just as bad, but did last longer.

 

The old vs new diesels are no comparison. I had/drove many pre-2000 stuff and its not the same, there were dependable ones, but now they just drive so much better.

Father inlaw had one in oldsmobile Delta 88 (or 98?)car and one in a pickup at the same time. Just not sure if it was a 1500 or a 2500, but I think it was a 1500. Had a friend with the smaller V8 diesel (a 260 maybe) in a cutlass -- it couldn't get out of it's own way.

 

 

Yeah, that 260 Cutlass was when the Cutlass became the Gutless. My relatives bought one of those back around 79 or 80, and with 5 people in it, it could not start out on a hill and go up. You had to go down first, and get a running start. POS!

Unfortunately GM is a follower and not a leader.It only took them 8 years after ford to offer a 6.6" crew in a 1500. I only see them coming too market with a diesel after Ford has one.The first one to offer a diesel with 300 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque will get my money. I had a 2011 duramax.I do miss that torque and sold it as it was almost too much truck for me.No gas engine will pull like a well tuned diesel.

My money is on it eventually being an option within the next 5-10 years. Fuel economy standards are only getting more strict and we're really hitting the ceiling here of what an internal combustion gas engine can do in a truck power wise and still save gas. They either need to come up with some sort of hybrid OR switch to a new engine and to me, the latter is the only viable option unless they can figure out how to make some ridiculously small yet powerful batteries. My guess is the diesel option in the Colorado/Canyon is a first run test before they switch over their main money makers (full size trucks & SUV's) to diesel engines. I'm extremely excited to see the new Titan and Tundra with the Cummins diesel engines. I don't care how ugly the trucks are I'm salivating over what's under the hood. Me personally, I'd much rather have a simple diesel engine than this EcoTec engine with 9 million things going on to try squeeze every possible mile out of a drop of gas. It's an engineering marvel that it works so smoothly and we don't have more issues, yet I can't help but want a simpler design despite that.

Dodge already has. From the initial look, it looks appealing, but in reality if its anything like what dodge has it really doesn't make sense when you break it down. if you look at the eco diesel in the ram it has 240hp and 420 torque. Hp isnt everything but to me that number should be around 300, so as it sits your 110hp or so from the gasers and only 30-40 torque than what than other gasers on the market and the same as the ecoboost and less than the 6.2l in the chevy. Also the ecodiesel tow rating is only in the 9k range, making no power tow worthy than anything on the market. Now for cost. The eco diesel has a 4k upcharge. Yes it CAN get 28mpg on the highway or around 23 all around. Factor in the upcharge and the fact diesel is 50cents to a dollar more a gallon, you will never make your money back on the ecodiesel in the ram, never. So your buying something that will cost you more money and wont give you advantage in anything.

 

Really to make it worthwhile in a half ton, one of two things has to happen. 1. they have to make it a true ecodiesel as in get 35-40mpg, which would make it a small diesel and probably put towing around the 7k range for towing, which at 40mpg it would be a nice sell. 2. Now I think what it really sell and be a game changer if they put a diesel in half ton that had 300hp and 450-500torque, got 30-35 hwy and would have to tow at least 10k, and lastly the upcharge would have to be around the 1500-2 mark. So for GM to put it in their smaller canyon tuck, makes sense. Im still disappointed that GM did nothing but redesign their 5.3 for this 1/2 ton line up.

I like my 14, but that's my biggest complaint with it, is really its nothing new. All GM did was update their highly outdated last model to something that just matched what was currently offered by others.

It's all all new interior and all new engine lineup. More than just an update/refresh.

No. The 5.7 diesel was only in passenger cars. The trucks all had a 6.5L diesel. I think in the 80s it didn't even have a turbo.

 

The addition of the first diesel engine of the three American automakers in a light duty pickup the 125 hp 350 cu in (5.7 L) Oldsmobile diesel V-8 began in 1978

In the 1982 model year, the 151 hp 379 cu in (6.2 L) Detroit Diesel V-8 was added[39] to replace the LF9 Oldsmobile diesel.

I agree, but like I said is all they did was match competitors very few things you can say about it, where you say WOW, or they really one upd ford or dodge. Your right this truck is leaps and bounds better the old one, but comparing yourself to what you did last really means little.

We had a couple of the 6.5 turbo GMs in P/Us one in a half ton the other in a one ton dually in 95. They ran good no problems. They came with 5 year 100k warranty. The one ton hit that in three years the 1/2 ton in 5. We traded after the warranty to be on the safe side. I had one 5.7 in an olds different story, always fixing leaks fuel leaks and oil leaks.

I had a '91 GMC with a non turbo 6.2 diesel, for work. That thing was a tank, and great on fuel. It was an awesome little truck.

Had a Delta 88 diesel that I paid $200 for in 92'. Replaced the alternator (did not run, why it was cheap) and it ran great for a couple of years and averaged over 30 on the hwy until the engine locked up one morning. Other than changing the oil a couple of times and adding freon, it was a reliable and cheap way to get to work. But it was ugly! The scrap guy picked it up and gave me a $100 and was amazed that it lasted to almost 200K miles.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
