Goodyear Wrangler SR-A tire question

As others have stated already, because of posts on this forum I expected the SR-A that came on the truck to suck big time. In the 1800 miles I used them in plowed muddy fields hunting and in the extreme cold and snow here in MN they were actually pretty good. Now they only had 1800 miles on them when I took them off but they far from "sucked big time" like a lot of people on here say.

I had the 18" SRA tires on my truck until I replaced the wheels and all with 20" Conti's and I can't tell a determinable difference between the sets. Both have been good tire combos for my truck. When the tires wear out, I'll likely go with Michelin, Firestone or BFG. Always had good service with those 3.

The tires are not good, the truck is, the combo of the longer cab and shorter bed makes for better weight distribution and the locking differential and good suspension helps planting the tires.

Mine have 20K miles on them now, driving around on a frozen lake today, and will be again tomorrow.

I tried the Dueler REVOs and the Dueler ATs, but they didn't last as long, and were a lot more noisy on the highway. The Duelers do have better traction, but I haven't had a problem with traction.

i came from michelin ltx ms-2s on my last 4x4 and freaking loved them.

with that said, these tires aren't too bad for non-premium OEMs. i wouldn't classify them as AT, more like highway all season.

This is my first winter with my truck and so far I have no complaints with regards to the rubber. However, I'd say 75% of my driving is highway and I doubt I will be doing any mudding anytime soon.

Thanks to all who offered opinions. Since I don't drive off road I've decided to give the SR-A tires a try during winter months and see how it goes; they are a quiet tire which is a plus for me. I do have a standing offer from Good-Year to make a change; obviously going to cost me $$$, but likely less hassle than trying to sell the tires myself. It's unfortunate that my dealer doesn't want to help, luck of the draw I guess.

I'm still wondering if myself and many others who paid the $200 extra for All Terrain tires are victims of a mistake or mis-interpretation by someone at GM who thinks all SR-A tires are All Terrain? I base that on what I was told by a good year rep who said only the SR-A tires with the "LT" prefix are all terrain, the SR-A with the "P" prefix are standard M/S tires ; which by the way is all I've seen on the dealer lots where the $200 extra cost was added. At any rate thanks to everyone; time to go snowmobiling !!

The SRA tires arent great tires....but not bad either. They give a good ride, and I think they're fine in the snow. They are not an AT tire, but simple commutes in snow they do ok. I just made it through 2 hours in a snow storm and never needed 4WD. I'm going to run them until they wear out and then replace with a better tire but ditching them early would be foolish I think unless you really need a stiffer tire for towing. It's important to note that the SRA has nothing to do with GM's large vibration issue in their new trucks. Nobody has solved it by changing tires. I dumped that truck and now have a Ford F150, with SRA's and it rides great on the highway with no vibs. In a year or two I'll switch to Nitto or Michelin but only after the SRAs are worn out.

Horrid. Nearly slid into a ditch on flat ground with those tires. Soft mud but barely an inch deep. Upgraded first opportunity after that. Tire shop gave me $275 for them. Deal.

2nd winter with the SRAs and I have no complaints. Not a great tire, but not bad at all. Just over 10000 miles. Wear is minimal. Quiet, good ride. I'll keep them until they get marginal for good winter traction.

Goodyear in general are poor quality tires. Bridge stone/Firestone, BF Goodrich, Michelin are much better. DO NOT BUY FROM WALLMART!! They have theirs made cheap.

Good advice, especially in regards to Walmart. Years ago, I learned a hard lesson about buying tires from them. Now I spend a little bit more money and buy from a reputable tire dealer here locally.

... 2nd year with my SRAs and not a single complaint. I've used them in pretty much all situations except true mudding (trails, fields, rain, snow, highway, around town). I'm wondering if the people with traction problems have smaller cabs? I have a fully loaded crew cab w/saddle box in the bed that is always loaded down too.

I don't think it is GM, Good-year lists it as a All-terrain on their website.

This is kind of like that Cowboys catch yesterday. While it was a catch, it wasn't per the rules. While these tires aren't all-terrain, they are per the rules.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
