Power steering pump

Do you check the fluid level when it off or running??? My 2012 3500 6.0 has been making some light squeaking noises when it's cold. Once warmed I don't hear it. But. I popped the cap to check. I have it parked inside a warm shop. And when I cracked the lid. A lot of pressure came out. And it's barely on the dip stick (3/16" at most. Only 1/4 way to the add line!!!). Please let me know as I only have a month of warranty left!!!

Ok. But. I did it off and cold (62* temp inside shop) and it's barely on the dip stick.... Where would the fluid go? I don't see any leaks. But everything has oil/grease on it from service

Have you checked it before? It may have been like that since new...dealers have been known to ignore fluids (greasing the front ends!)

Fluids shrink and expand with temperatures...unless you were at operating temps (the fluid, not coolant), it might read low.

Never checked it before. But when cold it sounds like a bearing (you can hear it 50 feet away)

And it never did that before (last winter in similar temps)

If it's on the stick it fine , top it up , drive truck ,if noise is present hot. Take it in for a warranty service visit ,

"Oil/grease on it from service" makes no sence except for grease zerks ,

Take it in anyways , don't wash anything

What I mean by oil/grease on it from service is the only stuff I see showing signs of grease is around stuff that is sopose to be lubed.

I just ran to the local gas station and got a bottle of power steering fluid. This stuff is clear like water and fluid in the truck is doo doo brown.... What color is gm power steering fluid? Don't smell burnt.... But with the hood up and truck running at full temp you can hear a metallic sound coming from the pump which is leading me to believe the pump bearings are shot (just had a 460 mile trip pulling a trailer and the last 200 miles I had a strong head wind and -10*f temps so she was singing 3200-3400 rpm most of those miles) but I see no signs of oil around the pump..... I have to visit the dealer anyways since I'm due for the yearly state inspection, I'm wondering if the drag the on pump is great enough that it might have something to do with why my alt gauge is being weird the past 2 days.... Usually I'm 14.4 to 15 on the gauge depending on what's running and run time vs off time/power draws/ short run times. Last two days I can't get the gauge to go past 14, it's siting around 13.8 or so.... But after I put power steering fluid in the truck and started it. It shot right up to about 15volts..... Interesting thing I noticed. And you still can hear the metallic sound coming out of the pump

Found my leak. It was right infront of my face.... It's up at the brake resi!!! Which shocked the hell out of. I'm use to seeing a vacuum assist canister up there. But mine. There is a pressure line and a return line that go up to a pump or idk what to call it. And it's covered in..... Oil. Hence where my fluid is going.

Is it common to have it crap out at 26700 miles? Probably explains my brakes. One time its like mushy (got to go down 1/3 way on pedal before you feel brakes) and then sometimes. I just touch the pedal and it's firm and plants me in the windshield

    • Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!
    • If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍
    • 2022 2500HD Crew Z71 Duramax single alternator.  Recently had the primary (water pump / fan) belt tensioner pulley bearing to fail while hundreds of miles from home of course the plastic pulley melted and belt shredded which took out some wiring. Found a replacement tensioner assembly and belt to continue now would like to find a replacement for just the pulley and bearing to have a spare assembly in case of a repeat, the rest of the tensioner is fine. Has anybody here found a correct replacement part for just the pulley and bearing? Any help is appreciated.
    • +1 for the 3.0   Perfect for 1500 pickup towing duties.   Perfect engine for a 1500 pickup period. Huge torque at stunningly low RPM makes it feel a lot lighter than it is. The fuel mileage is insane for a tall and heavy 1500... 30+ on the highway. Mid 20's around town.   It's probably not perfect if you bought a 6.2 for the braaaaaaapppppp V8 noises and wrapping it out to 6k. The LZ0 acts and sounds like a small turbo diesel and there's nothing you can do to make a small turbo diesel sound like a big one, and you can't make an inline diesel sound like a V8 diesel/big Duramax. It's a different driving experience altogether.   Drive one, I think you'll like it, though...
    • I'll bet your truck lost the bearings on a roller on 1 of the lifters, and now is wiping out a cam lobe.
