Will removing catalytic converter help or hinder?????

I have a 2002 2500HD, 8.1, Crew/Long bed, 4x4 with 105,000. A couple of years ago I had Justin at BlackBear do a tune. Now am at approximately 390 HP and 500 lb/ft torque.

NOW, if I were to remove the cat converter will the "loss of back-pressure"m be an advantage to the 8.1 or will it just screw things up. I was wondering if somehow it would increase fuel economy at all, if that is even possible, and maybe even help with performance.

Thank you

I dont think the big blocks are as picky about it

Just curious how you got to 390hp/500tq? I have the same truck but a 2003 I did the tune with justin also but no way in southern California could I get away with no cats.

You can, just need to install them at smog time. For me though, it is too much work. Also, I am sure his numbers are estimates.

If your cats are clogged you could gain some power and more mpg by removing them. But at the same time you would need to get them tuned out or trick your truck into thinking they were still there.

^ this. Replace your O2 sensors if they are stock to pick up a few mpg. They get "slow" as they age and don't adjust the air fuel ratio as fast as they could = lost mpg. You could always put in a high flow cat. You definitely wouldn't loose any performance and mpg with it removed. If you remove it your exhaust will be a little louder.

FYI if you delete make sure your 02 sensors AFTER your cats have been tuned out (disabled) or you will have problems.

I replaced all 4 O2 sensors and put in high flow cats at 180k in my 97 5.7. Picked up 2 - 3 mpg on hwy. but I have a small block and you the BIG BLOCK so YMMV. Those 8.1's pull hard!

I have 06 6.0, does it have 4 O2's also?

They all have 4.

Well since we are on the subject now anyone have a recommendation for replacement 02 sensors?

Disabled after sensors!!!! Not replace

Computer has to be programmed not to see that the cats aren't there

I've had nothing but positive experiences buying from 1a auto.com. Good parts, knowledgeable staff, and good prices.
