Brake Job

So my truck is at 60k and do for a brake job. I was going to do it myself when the the weather improves in a couple of weeks. So the question is are there any secrets of speacial tools needed on a 900 series. I will be doing the front and rear, also what do you guys recomend for replacement parts.

Fronts don't require much caliper bolts are 19mm bracket bolts are 18mm and if your changing rotors you'll need a small torx bit not sure the exact size though. 15 maybe. Rears depending on the year requires different tools. The first design can be done with a pair of side cutters and needle nose vice grips, at least that's how I do them and it's much easier than the special tool they make for it. The second design you'll need a set off drum brake tools or at least a hold down spring tool.

That's why I'm so glad my '14 has disc on the rear. My 98 of course had drums on the rear and I never wanted to deal with them so I had no problem paying the shop to do the rears. disc is nothing, I just don't like all the springs and all that's in a drum brake.

Well my truck is an 11 so dose that need the tools for drums?

Drums are nothing to do. Just do one side at a time. There is only one big "horseshoe" clip that holds the shoes in place. Easily done with a hook tool. Make sure to adjust them up good and grind off the rust ridge on the drums if you aren't changing them.

My factory front brakes on my 2010 were junk under 30,000 miles. I do a lot of towing with the truck but also have trailer brakes. Needed rotors and pads before 30,000.

Damn, I don't do a lot of towing, but lots of stop and go, my pads were at 50% at 80,000 on my '09

Don't forget to replace the stock brake hoses with a set of ss braided hose, Russell makes a killer set.
