I just got a look at the 2016 Fleet Ordering Guide. No mention of 8 speed transmissions, just the same 6 speed Allison for the Duramax and the 6 speed Hydramatic for the 6.0L. I hear the changes are coming for the 2017 model year.

My pleasure. Thing to look out for is when the 2017's debut. You never know, 2016 could be a short model year.

My guess is also that 2017 will bring any major changes. The new, tougher EPA diesel emission standards kick in for 2017 for one. Who knows what they will do on the gasser side of things. I am quite sure they will not come to their senses and offer us an updated 454 big block.

Well you know they will at least do AFM. Do you think they will go as far as start/stop technology in the gasser?

I doubt the gasser will get AFM. The only way that will happen is if they put a new engine in.

Yeah, I am not convinced they will do AFM on any gasser in the HD trucks. But I have been wrong before! Whether they take the 6.2L straight out of the 1500 series, AFM and all, and drop it in is not outside the realm of possibility. Keep in mind, the primary buyers of 2500/3500 pickups are commercial users. Those folks are not going to stand for nonsense. I am a firm believer that is why GM has stuck with the tried and true 6.0L in the HD's. Those folks don't want gimmicks. They are not looking for something that will beat the crowd off the line at a stop light. They want solid, reliable, long lasting motors in those pickups. If GM ticks off the commercial users, that can really put a dent in things for GM.

 

But given the risk of GM screwing the pooch on this, I got me a 2015 2500HD 6.0L, as I didn't want to be a guinea pig for anything GM might pull. As with any new stuff they do, I sure hope it all works out great. I wasn't willing to take the chance and see. By the time they get the bugs all worked out in several years, I will take another look.
