2017 will get a new gas engine, ram is doing AFM in the 6.4 in the 2500/3500 trucks, Ford and GM will follow with new engines using AFM as well.

 

GM has been talking of using a 7.0 motor and I am going to say that is what the motor will be for the HD trucks.

 

Regular old 6.0 for the carry over 2016, get the good old proven 6.0 while you can.

The 2017 H/D's should be an interesting model with a new gasser and upgraded diesel. Hopefully the great reliability will stay the same. Thanks for the update:

If GM goes to AFM, I am glad I got my 2015 2500 6.0L. No one is positive about what GM will do yet, but GM doing something goofy like that is one of the reasons I jumped on this one now instead of waiting to find out. I will let everyone else play in that AFM sandbox. Could be it will not have any of the issue of past AFM motors, but I know a questionable hand in poker when I see it, and I am not playing in the AFM game except being dragged into it kicking and screaming. Also, I am an old cavalry sergeant. The policy then and now for me is that everyone packs the gear. I paid for 8 cylinders and I expect them all to work with no government or union sponsored goofing off while the other cylinders do the work. I don't need a motor that reflects the national condition where many folks work and pull the wagon and more and more people hop on for a free ride at the productive worker's expense.

GM now has a software only iteration of AFM and if they go to it in the HD then it will be the new Software only version.

Now that is interesting. Does it mean that there is no mechanical deactivation (special lifters, ect.)? Wonder how they pulled that off. Have to admit my 2011 Yukon has never had an AFM issue and uses no oil. I like the 20+ m.p.g..

 

I think the 6.0L will still be around. It is a good CNG/LNG engine, and direct injection engines can't run on gaseous fuels. GM also sells a lot of 6.0L's to Isuzu and Freightliner.

 

I have heard the 7.0L rumors too. Not sure I believe them, the current 7.0L has an aluminum block something that GM will not use in a HD truck. Of course, there could be an iron block 7.0L under development.

One of the aspects of the cylinder deactivation was that they valves not open on deactivated cylinder. Supposedly to keep pressure and push back on the piston moving and to keep any vacuum from drawing oil past the rings. The AFM valve lifters on present motors are deactivated via solenoids that keep oil from filling the valve lifter and allowing it to collapse. So one would think, to make anything work like they have done so, it would demand a similar thing. They have to prevent valves from opening on deactivated cylinders. Not quite sure how they would pull that off using only software in the ECM. There has to be some mechanical aspect to it. May not be the same as now, but something. Just shutting off fuel and spark doesn't solve all the problems.

 

Either way, I didn't like it in my 2013 5.3L and am quite comfortable that it is not a part of my 2015 6.0L. As Scotty commented on a Star Trek movie..... "the more complicated they make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain". If I had done proper research on various aspects of the newer stuff, I would not have ever bought the 2013. Learned that lesson though.

Nah, no fear of technology. Just know what I want. Not much different than my preference for the M-14 over the AR "black rifle". While the AR can be adapted to a variety of roles and is more "advanced" in many ways, you cannot throw it in a mud hole then drag it thru sand and just wipe it off and it will work just fine like a M-14 or M1 Garand can. Evidently others thought so as many M-14's were pulled out of mothballs to go to work in the latest wars. Some things just do a job better.

 

There s an elegance in simplicity that stands the test of time. I like my iPhone and my MacBook Pro but want nothing to do with AFM in a motor. Can handle direct injection in them, because I have had it in most every diesel I have owned since the 80's. Glad the gassers finally made it to the party. Now if they would offer something like a 6.2 with DI and no AFM (hardware or software) then might be worth taking a look at. But GM seems to have a love affair with AFM. That's fine. I just don't want any part of it. I have seen enough TSB's on problem resolution directly related to AFM that it is not a party I want to attend.

Your bearing a dead horse, I love the simple 6.0 as well but if you want a newer motor and don't like AFM then drive in M5 or get it tuned to turn it off, not a big deal, not since it came out in '08 has there been any problems with it.

 

Fact of the matter is the HD trucks push so much wind that they would never go into AFM mode anyways.

Well, not quite. I don't want to have to do end runs on something I didn't ask for to begin with. I would just as soon not have it. Even if I were to do end runs on the stuff, the hardware components are still in there that do the AFM thing and can fail. It isn't just a matter of not having cylinders shutting down, it is also a matter of not having the guts in there that do it. It is complicating things beyond what I want or need. I really don't worry about how others view this. If they are happy having the stuff, want to tune or run M5 to override it, whatever. Why should I have to jump thru hoops to shut off something that I don't want to begin with? Better to just avoid it if possible, like buying what I did.

Looking at that, now I have a better understanding why my semi truck, under a load, gets almost as good of mpg as a 3500 under a load. I think that the frontal grill area of my semi is actually less than that pickup! Kinda hard to get good mpg when you are pushing a wall thru the air! I know is perception just from looking at pictures, but I would love to set that pickup and my semi truck side by side and compare the radiator grill area to see how much different they are.

Fyi,

 

My work truck is a Volvo 10spd,with the 425hp Cummins, 12.7L engine. 1650lb tq.

 

Pulling a set of 28ft trailers, with 20,000lbs each on them, for a total of about 50,000lbs total trailer weight, I average 7.8mpg.

 

 

I have no idea what a 6.0gm gasser does with all the fuel, as that is what they get pulling 7,000lbs.
