My truck has 3.08's, 2" RC Level w/ DuraTracs (275/70/18)(E) - basically a 33" and I've lost about 5mpg on the highway. Consistent average on 100mile drives recently is about 20mpg, where as pre level/tires I was seeing consistent mid 20's. Truck doesn't seem to mind and I have no complaints about driveability. The one time I did notice was a 340 mile drive up to Vermont, on some of the long inclines the truck did "hunt" for gears but nothing some manual mode couldn't deal with, I also kept an eye on transmission temps with nothing to cause concern......All that said, I will not be going with the load range e tires again, but will stay with 275/70/18. Not sure I'd be happy with driveability with larger lift.

Doesn't seem too bad. Still getting 20 on the highway, and i think these things "hunt" for the right gear regardless in certain situations. Seems like 33s is more than ok. interested to hear if anyones running 35s

sarcastic? lol

the truck doesn't bother me the way that it is, I just hate the long 3rd gear before it shifts, into 4th,

oh ok... you were being serious... so your running 35s on 308 gearing? Hows the power? mpg plummet to single digits?

lol, yeah i'm serious. on E85 I get about 10 mpg, on 87 I get 14/15,as of power it feels the same to me, I cant tell. but ive been told about looking into regearing my truck, I just don't want to spend that kind of money, unless I can damage some thing by having this size lift with 35's,

those highway numbers or combined? How long have you been on that setup? Do you monitor your tranny temp?

Sorry for the hundred questions

P.S. truck looks really good

the best I got on highway with e85 is 13mpg, the best with 87 is about 19mpg, my tranny temp is around 200 degrees, ive had this set up for about 2 months, before the 12" lift I had a 8" lift for about 3 months, I don't mind the questions, thanks for the complement, I'm just wondering if I need to be regeared or not, so i'm glad you posted this, maybe ill get some help too,

I think the 3.08 gears are fine. I have 3.08's and dumb me didn't pay attention to what gears came in my new 2014 when I traded in my 2005 with 3.42's for it (both extended cabs, 4x4, 5.3L). I tow a boat (only about 3000lbs) sometimes so when I realized it I at first had that sick feeling in my stomach since I run larger tires also. But after doing a little reading and crunching the numbers I discovered with the new 6 speed tranny its better in every gear than the 4 speed was. And this is comparing the 3.42 vs the 3.08 gears I went too. Here are the numbers comparing the two and also corrected for my tire size:

6 speed (stock 265/70R17, 31.6")

1st: 4.03 x 3.08 = 12.41

2nd: 2.36 x 3.08 = 7.27

3rd: 1.53 x 3.08 = 4.71

4th: 1.15 x 3.08 = 3.54

5th: .85 x 3.08 = 2.62

6th: .67 x 3.08 = 2.06

6 speed (larger 285/70R17, 32.7")

1st: 4.03 x 2.98 = 12.00

2nd: 2.36 x 2.98 = 7.032

3rd: 1.53 x 2.98 = 4.559

4th: 1.15 x 2.98 = 3.427

5th: .85 x 2.98 = 2.533

6th: .67 x 2.98 = 1.996

4 speed (stock 265/70R17, 31.6")

1st: 3.06 x 3.42 = 10.465

2nd: 1.75 x 3.42 = 5.985

3rd: 1.00 x 3.42 = 3.42

4th: .70 x 3.42 = 2.394

4 speed (larger 285/70R17, 32.7")

1st: 3.06 x 3.3 = 10.098

2nd: 1.75 x 3.3 = 5.775

3rd: 1.00 x 3.3 = 3.3

4th: .70 x 3.3 = 2.31

So I've effectively been rolling around with 2.98 gears and drivability, power, mpg in my opinion are better than what it was in my 2005. I cant comment on how 35's would be but 33's should be absolutely fine.

I have the 3.42s and will be doing a 4" lift and 33s. Even that scares me a little. I wish these things had the 3.92s like the Rams.

I can't imagine running a 12" and 35s with only 3.08s.. yikes. If I were you I'd regear to at least 4.10. 12" lift... holy crap dude. And here I thought 6" is too much. You shoulda bought a diesel.

Gearing may be better but I'm sure the tow rating is significantly lower than the 05 with 3.42's

Acually the window sticker on the 2005 was 6400 lbs and the 2014 is 7200 lbs. And for me at least both are more than enough for the weight of my boat.

That's odd because the crew cab I looked at before I purchased my high country was rated for like 5800. Must be something to do with the bed length. If i had 3.08's on the trip I just came back from, towing and hauling 4k pounds of quads and gear through the mountains, plus that doesn't include passengers, the truck definitely would have struggled. Glad I got 3.42's for sure

Not trying to steal the thread from OP, but I have 3.08 as well and once I wear out the stock tires, I'm going to go with some Toyo MT or AT2 in a 33. I've really been talking myself into a re-gear down the road. My question is with 3.08 now and lets say 33's, would 3.73 be an effective ratio? Don't think I need 4.10. If i'm going to spend the money, I think 3.73 should be right on the money. What do yall think?

Another question I've been curious about is to those of you with 3.08 and a tune, does it help with downshifting on the highway? I run M5 most of the time, until I'm cruising down the interstate, then I go up to M6 or drive, but anytime I need to accelerate, whether it's a little or a lot, the truck will downshift 1-2 gears. I had my last truck tuned and it did wonders. Been looking into getting a tune for some time on this one. Just curious as if this will help this issue.

I've got a hill here on my way home from town, my truck has to climb to 4500 rpm to accelerate up it. (I can climb it without accelerating, but it'd still be 3500-4k rpm to do so.) with 3.08s.

I told dad the other day.. if I ever have to tow a car to the house.. I'm taking the flat road thats longer.. I wont even ATTEMPT to pull a ~4k vehicle on a ~2k trailer up that hill.

This gearing thing still makes me nervous. With my new rims my mpg fell from 18.9 to about 17.4 (from 255/70/17 to 275/55/20, stock suspension.) I'm kind of afraid of what my mpg will look like if I go 3.42s, but I really think if I ever plan to tow ANYTHING around these foothills, it'd be in my best interest to do so.

I think 33s you'll be fine if you dont plan to tow or go mountain climbing with 3.08s, but I mean.. 3.08s barely work on a stock setup, with a lift and bigger tires.. its good piece of mind.
