2008 Silverado Fuel issue.

Hey,

i have a problem with my 08 silverado, when im pumping gas it wont go a second without clicking the handle! takes 20+ minutes to fill her up, talk about a pain.

 

My first thought is something blocking it, but the fuel does go down, just not quick.

 

My next step is replacing the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid but im unsure if this will solve the problem?

 

any suggestions would be a big help.

Have not looked for a long time, but, they used to run a vent line from the top of the tank up to the side of the filler neck just below where the nozzle would reach. All it did was vent the air back up to the filler neck once the fuel level became higher than the level of the fill pipe where it is pushed into the tank. Has the truck ever been in an accident on the left side?

The vent line I am talking about does not vent to the atmosphere, and it does not work very well with the gas cap on, but then, it does not need to.

There is a line running to the filler neck but the truck hasnt been in an accident at all, the truck is on on a 1/4 to half most times because i cant sit there for 20 minutes pumping fuel.....

 

 

Would me disconnecting the vapour canister and trying to fill it up harm anything? that way i can see if thats the issue.

Won't hurt a thing, but will throw your light on. If you live in an area that tests for this crap, you'll fail.

 

 

My '07 has done this since day one. Some pumps are worse than others, but lots of times you can just reposition the depth of the pump into the filler neck. I haven't thought about this in a while - amazing the crap you get used to after dealing with it for 8 years ... :nonod:

 

Sometimes I've got so pissed off that I hung the pump up after pumping .50 cents, and moved to a different pump. Sometimes that works, but it still has to be in the "sweet spot" ... which changes at every fillup. :banghead:

 

Another pain in the ass deal - never in my life have I ever had, nor even HEARD of this issue on any vehicle built prior since the dawn of the automobile. If this is progress, I'll gladly buy a "new" truck built 4 decades ago!

Yikes, i dont think i could live with this for 8 years, its only been 6 months and its driving me insane. im going to disconnect it tonight and see if it helps, if not im pulling the filler neck and praying i find something inside to remove.

if all this doesnt work, looks like im going to the shop for 90/hr :(

There has to be a fix for it somewhere - I just haven't looked for one yet.

Now that I think about it after being reminded by Jsdirt's post, I have had this happen a few times as well. Pretty sure all I ever did to fix it was pull the nozzle back about an inch and then not run at 100%. This would fix it every time. I will have to pay attention next time to see if I still do that.

 

I have had vehicles do this over the last near 40 years, and other than the fuel cell in my pro-street mustang, simply easing up on the handle would stop it from happening. Nothing worked on the mustang, other than just using a gas can at home before going out.

Well i was speaking to a buddy who builds cars, he said he had it happen once, with a motor home, he took it in a bumpy field and it kinked the vent hose.

 

it sorta made sense to me as it all happened in December and i enjoy ripping through the odd field during that time and its always super bumpy, of course.

 

so maybe this weekend ill drop the fuel tank and have a look!

Mine did it on my first fillup, with 220 miles on the odometer. Truck hadn't even seen rain yet. Definitely not from off-roading.

 

The true fix would be to scrap the entire EVAP system and let the damn tank breathe. Thanks to the government, alot of us can't do that. The government is expert in costing us money, and making our lives difficult - all while brainwashing the masses into believing it's for their own good. What a racket! :banghead:

This has been happening ever since they started putting gas tank fill pipes around objects in order to get a pleasing appearing fuel fill opening. Really has nothing to do with EVAP. The fuel is backing up in the fill pipe, covering the vent hole in the fuel nozzle, tripping the fuel shut off. Find out why the fuel is backing up in the pipe, and you have found the reason for the nozzle shutting off for "no reason".

OP should try slowing down the flow, in addition to moving the nozzle back about an inch, and/or turning the nozzle to the right and left and see if that makes a difference. But is it likely something wrong with the tank vent to fill pipe line.

I would say it's a design flaw. Everyone I've talked to with the same vehicle around here deals with the same b/s at every fillup.

 

Do GM engineers test ANYTHING they design?? :banghead:

 

How long have we been building vehicles with FUEL TANKS again ?????

I remember reading somewhere that someone had found that the filler neck had actually partially collapsed and was causing a restriction in the tube. Worth a shot to just take a look at anyway.

The solenoid may be stuck closed or the charcoal canister could be clogged with fuel if you are in the habit of topping off.

Can't be any of those things since mine did this nearly right off the showroom floor during my first fillup, and has done it every time ever since. No check engine light has ever come on - something in the EVAP system surely would've failed by now after 8 years of this if the canister was saturated or a solenoid stuck.

 

Bottom line is you just adjust where you place the nozzle in the fill neck depth-wise, and it works. At least that's the case in my situation.

 

If I put the nozzle in as far as it will go, the pump clicks off constantly - would take all day to fill the tank. If you rest it about an inch out from fully seated, it's fine ... and some pumps you have to move it around several times to find the spot where it won't kick off.

 

One thing is for sure - GM needs to re-evaluate this design! :fume:

Yes it can be one of those things. I know someone who had the problem and a new solenoid fixed it completely.
