285/75-17 (Stock rims) with BDS 4"?

First post, but a lot of research. Great content on here...

 

I have a 2015 Silverado Crew 4x4 LT Tungsten. Want to run something between 33-35" and have been pretty undecided on lift. Used to have a lifted Jeep JK (4 door) that was heavily modified on 37s for rock crawling. Dont want to go that extreme with my truck.

 

Have settled on a BDS 4" with the Fox shock upgrade. Have also settled on Fuel Anza 18"x9"... kick ass wheels.

Will probably go with Toyo R/T in a 33x12.50-18" flavor when I buy my new wheels. Rims will prob be +1 offset/5.0 back spacing. MIGHT need to go +20/5.75" BS since the BDS widens the track. I like the rims sticking out of the fenders a little, but realize that causes some rub issues.

 

My thought is to break up the expenses. Get my lift done first, and get some tires on my stock 17" rims to get me by temporarily. I am also itching to try out a less aggressive tire, so was thinking of Toyo Open Country ATII Extreme in 285/75-17. Supposedly is 33.8x11.2 according to calculators.

 

Will that rub? I am thinking it might be an issue rubbing on some links more than the wheel well/liner. No prob cutting plastic a little if needed, but need it to be functional. What are your thoughts?

I don't think it will rub, since that size tire won't rub even with a 2.5" level. However, I wouldn't have the lift installed separately if you plan on running it with stock rims for a long time. Maybe with 4" it won't be bad, but I've driven a friend's truck with a 6" and the stock 18 inch wheels and it was just awful.

Thanks for the feedback. Awful from what perspective? It should drive great with almost a 34" tire (and lots of sidewall) and a high end lift. It wont be the exact look I am going for, and I think the tires would be a little far inside for my liking, but what would be awful about it?

 

On that thought, does anybody know the offset/back spacing of the stock 17's on the 2015?

I have the exact same wheels wrapped with 255/75/17 Goodyear Duratracs. Love the ride of the Duratracs compared to the stock Bridgestones Duelers.....

 

Keeping an eye on this thread, I'm also in the market for new wheels, totally confused on offsets and backspacing.... But I plan on buying 275/70/18 Duratracs with Mamba M15 wheels

The idea of backspacing and offset isnt all too difficult to understand on their own. But the impact of them on different vehicles is pretty unique. This drawing sums it up pretty well:

View this diagram as your passenger tire for reference... left is inside toward the vehicle and right is outside away from the vehicle.

 

Here is a good explanation from Discount Tire:

Offset and backspace are essentially two different ways of looking at the same thing. They determine the location of the wheel and tire assembly when bolted to the vehicles hub.

Offset is the measured distance between the hub mounting surface and the wheels center line.

With X being the determined offset, the hub mounting surface on positive offset wheels is X amount forward from the wheel center line. The hub mounting surface on negative offset wheels is X amount backwards from the wheel center line. The hub mounting surface on 0 offset wheels is the wheel center line.

Backspacing is the measurement from the hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel.

***Typically speaking, the higher the offset/backspace, the more the wheel will tuck inwards towards the suspension or away from the fender. The lower the offset/backspace, the more the wheel will push out away from the suspension or towards the fender.

For Example:

*If the offset on a 9" wide wheel is +12mm, the hub mounting surface will be 12mm forward from the wheels center line. Measuring from the hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel, the backspacing is 5.5"

*If the offset on a 9" wide wheel is -12mm, the hub mounting surface would be 12mm towards the back of the wheel from the wheels center line. Measuring from the hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel, the backspacing is 4.5"

Here's how to calculate the backspacing using the rim width and offset:

First - add 1" to the rim width and then divide by 2 to find the wheels center line (you have to account for the wheel flange which is why you add 1" to the rim width) . Second - convert the offset which is in millimeters into inches. There is 25.4mm in 1 inch so divide the offset by 25.4. Lastly - add the converted offset to the wheels center line if the offset is positive for the correct backspacing. Subtract the converted offset to the wheels center line if the offset is negative for the correct backspacing.

For Example:

17x9 +12mm offset:
*9" rim width + 1" = 10"
*10"/2 = 5" (wheels center line)
*+12mm offset/25.4 = 0.47" (0.50" rounded up)
*0.50" + 5" = 5.50" Backspace

17x9 -12mm offset:
*9" rim width + 1" = 10"
*10"/2 = 5" (wheels center line)
*-12mm offset/25.4 = 0.47" (0.50" rounded up)
*0.50" - 5" = 4.50" Backspace

***Please note that the wheels center line is the backspacing for 0 offset wheels.

so what would a 18x9 wheel with 5.475 backspace and 12mm offset look like compared to stock 17's ?

Nah, I'm kidding. Everybody has their own opinions. Other than the obvious that the new rim is 1" taller, it would sit a little under 1" further toward the outside with that offset. That is based on a guess that the stock rim is around a 30-35mm positive offset.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my original post.

 

I meant it drove awful because it had a 6" lift and stock rims and tires. Tires were too small, truck was too high, handling was crap.

You don't need a 4" lift to run 33's.... I have a 2.5" RC Level and running 275/65/20's toyo open country MT's (34.1" tires) on stock All Terrain wheels.

 

And I personally think you will get bored with the Toyo AT's. The MT's are not a true aggressive mud Terrain. No where near as aggressive at BFG Mud Terrains or Nitto Mud Grapplers. Hell, Nitto Trail Grapplers are more aggressive than Toyo MTs

Jumped right in... Glad I did, too. Looks great, rides great, very happy so far. I've only driven it about 15 miles though. Maybe I need to run to the store for the Mrs?

Thanks man. Couldnt be happier... well, maybe with some 1.5" spacers on the rear... and some darker tint... and a winch bumper... and rhino lining... and a tuner... and... Well, I guess I could be a little happier, but I'm stoked right now anyway.

That does look good. I didn't think I would be a fan of the 18" wheel but I like the look of more tire. Turned out really nice. Good job.

I personally have been debating these wheels for some time now. I cant decide whether I want my truck all black or black with the anthracite wheels. Not sure if its the angle of the sun but the color of the wheel in the picture looks MUCH brighter grey than the color on your truck. Any other pictures of the wheels on your truck?
