Cross drilles and slotted rotors,

Oh and by the way, in NASCAR they use OVERsized plain rotors in leiu of drilled or slotted in order to increase surface area. I stress the term OV ERsized. They dont worry so much about overheating because of the size of the rotor and the fact they have blowers to funnel air directly to the rotor and caliper.

 

YEP, huge NASCAR and NASTRUCK fan right here!

 

I knew they use blowers and they don't care for longevity since the brakes are one of a lot that are replaced every race. I just thought they were slotted in some way, even if the slots weren't as long or deep as you see for street use. I know you've seen how they will glow red hot at some tracks. But, I figured at the high braking tracks like a road course or Pocono they might use slotted. I know they use huge 6 piston calipers on high braking tracks and some of the tracks like a plate track they might only use 4 piston calipers. I wish I could go to a race and go in the pics during practice so I can get a good look at some of the stuff they run. What's sad is that I'm an hour and a half south of Richmond and never been there for a race.

I am glad you brought that up, I never really noticed it before. The last time I had a chance to look at the rotors personally they were plain with huge surface areas and central venting. Seems now they have incorporated slots.

But what about having them for a daily driver, and a every once in awhile pull a trailer, I'm not doing 200MPH on a track, and not going down a drag strip, just want them for the looks and maybe what ever little performance I can get out of them considering that my trailer doesn't have brakes

Like I said earlier, I have had no problems with the dimpled and slotted EBC rotors. They were not expensive, but not cheap either. The braking improvement I saw with those rotors would likely be attributable to the hawk pads I installed with the rotors. But the Hawk pads were so dirty, I took them off and put OEM brake pads back on. OEM pads are very clean. You won't miss them unless you put something else on. I've not seen anything as clean as the OEM pads.

Do it right or don't bother. The ones you posted earlier will be worthless and probably degrade performance. The parts Spurshot mentioned will cost more but it's the only way. Compromising brake performance for aesthetics is insane.

What is learned on the track is applied to the street. You may not be doing 200 mph, but your big ass tires are still stressing the breaks more than normal not to mention adding a trailer. Clint, you know I have Stoptech drilled rotors. They are a stepping stone for me to later be replaced by a set that about 5K. I would rather use the 5K now on some other projects and save a few hundred here and there to get my final set later, when it is time to change them for real. I was curious and had the opportunity to get a set for cost. I did and don't regret it. There is a noticeable difference to me. My other car is. GT500 and my girls car is a BMW M5. I think I have driven a few cars with brakes on them.

 

The bottom line is you have to make the decisions whether you want to spend the money or not. Stoptech and EDC are trustworthy brands in my opinion, and for what these rotors actually cost, I have not seen a set of similar rotors that are as good. Spurshots Willwoods are niiiiiicccccceeee! And I can guarantee they perform, I am just not a wildwood guy, more Baer, APRacing, Brembo, then Wilwood. But any one of them are a great company with a great product.

 

As I tried to point out earlier, the reason NASCAR didn't used to use drilled or slotted was because they did not need to. The use oversized plain rotors with huge center air channels and blowers. What I have noticed now is that the rotor is smaller and they have started using slots.....that was the point of the picture. Now you have to ask yourself, are they doing it for looks? Is it going to fail? Are they durable? Will they slow you down from 190 to 55 in the blink of an eye? Yes is the answer to everyone of those questions. Now transfer that to the street....of course their using multi thousand dollar brakes. But if you benefit from 3% of that technology, that 3% you didn't have yesterday. Once again the question goes back to you and whether you are will to spend the money for 3% improvement or not. For me I think it's at least 10% and I am satisfied and there's not a Muldune on here that's gonna sway me otherwise. Experience trumps inexperience every day of the week and twice on Sundays!

Clint, I would like to point out that your best bet would be to upgrade rotor size and caliper like Spurshot. I state this because your wheel tire combo is much larger. I wasn't really looking at that as a consideration when debating the point. But for an oem 22 inch wheel and tire combo the standard oem size rotor is plenty large enough for starters. My 37cents.

That's true too, thanks for the input, yeah I can tell a big difference in breaking with these wheels and tires then the stock ones that I had on it

Clint,

The thing that will make your truck stop better is bigger brakes. They usually cost thousands. But there are a few "big brake" conversions that use the stock caliper and put a modestly larger rotor on. These kits have a caliper relocation bracket that replaces the stock bracket, as well as a set of larger rotors, of course. A larger diameter rotor is very effective in providing a better mechanical advantage. The same friction is applied on a longer moment arm.

 

I think I found a kit that may fit the K2. The OEM calipers are the same GMT900 to K2. The rotors seem to be different OEM part numbers. But the caliper brackets seem to be unchanged GMT900 to K2. I'm thinking this SSBC 14" rotor/caliper relocation kit will work on the K2. http://ssbrakes.com/i-10093030-rotor-14-rotor-caliper-relocation-kit-a126-47.html

Of course, you should check with SSBC tech support.

Of course, if you just have a pile of money burning a hole in your pocket, the 16" brakes from Wilwood will make your truck stop really good.

I have the 16/14 wilwood kit on my Yukon. The stopping performance is undeniable. I would not go with aesthetics on a cheaper brand.

Your truck cost alot.. your rims and tires cost alot etc!!! Don't cut corners spend the Xtra money and get good brakes. If your going to get them. IMO
