V-6 horrible fuel mileage

I love my v6 I average about 21 mpg stock it'll go down I'm sure with at tires it has all the power I need for towing etc.. Just wish people at work would stop giving me crap for having a v6 and having no power and how their 5.3 is better.. Granted yes it is but for what I need it does great and more just hate the typical Oh its a v6 jokes

As long as your happy with the V6 then that is all that matters. I didn't really look at the V6 when I was shopping and I think GM dropped the ball in marketing the engine. The closest dealership to me had a ton of V6 crew cabs last year and I think they had trouble moving them. I just looked at their website and not one of the 90 trucks on the lot have a V6 this year, no matter what the configuration. If GM would had advertised the power of the new DI V6 compared to the out going 5.3 and 4.8 they may have been able to sale a few more. At the same time with what they charge for trucks, $1,000 more for a V8 with slightly less gas mileage is not going to sway most people to the V6. If it got 5 mpg more and cost $2,500 less then more people would probably bite.

my 4.3 reg cab 4x4 with a 350 liter fuel barrel gets 13.5 Liters per 100kms, about 18mpg. and thats driveing hard in mud and dirt roads everyday

I think your math is off.

 

1L / km = 2.35MPG

13.5L / 100km = .135L / km

That's about 7.5MPG

I;m not that far off LOL i just went out to the truck, Metric is 13.5L/100kms, U.S is 17.4 MPG.

Yeah... MY math was off. I missed a multiplier.

 

13.5L / 100km = .135L/km

 

1/.135 = 7.407

2.35 * 7.407 = 17.4MPG

Just filled up and was at 17.2 over the last tank, without correcting for tire size. I am sure I could increase that as well. DIC displayed 18.5 which is probably closer to actual when correcting for the taller tires. I would agree that it's more than likely you driving habits with all the short trips you do.

Agreed, 100%.

 

The GM 4.3 is a better motor than the Ford or RAM V6, if it was coupled with an 8 speed transmission it would be a BETTER truck than the old 5.3 with it's 6 speed I bet.

 

Pricing is so close to the 5.3 there's not much reason to consider it unless you get a sweet deal.

That's just how I am, and how I will always be. Ford is never, EVER going to sell me on their EcoPoop motors and I'm never going to own a full size truck with a V6. Doesn't matter how much any company advertises it.

If I needed to do heavy work with a truck, a turbo diesel V6 would be quite good. It doesn't fit my use cases, though, so I won't have a V6 in a full-sized truck. And, I just don't think I'll "settle" for the mid-sized trucks any more. I'm 6'1" with long legs. I logged more than my share of miles in the smaller trucks. I'm good. :)

They already sold a ton more 4.3s, up to 20% from 5%. Here's the reason:

This helped our V-6–powered Silverado turn a quarter-mile time of 15.7 seconds at 89 mph. That’s a tenth of a second faster than the 6.0-liter V-8 “VortecMAX” Silverado we tested back in 2007.

 

Driving the 2014 4.3l felt a LOT like driving the 2010 5.3l I traded in to buy it. (and not a lot different than the 2015 5.3l I have now)

 

If they put an 8 speed with a transmission cooler on the 4.3l, I'd definitely consider one next time I'm buying. My boat weighs under 3000lbs, and the 4.3l towed it easily. I'd still have it if the dealer I bought it from hadn't told me they had no external cooler for it and would void my warranty if I had an aftermarket one put on it. (saw some high temps in a "worst case" towing scenario, and I'm a big believer in external coolers if you tow at all)

And, which reason was that? Coarser than the V6 from Chrysler? The fact that you can only get max output from E85? It being less refined than the 5.3L? Its vibration levels? The fact that GM is doing NOTHING to tout it? The fact that it's essentially the same design as the previous gen?

 

You pointed to a review that didn't point out ANY specific reason that it is actually any better, stated that it now accounts for 20% of all Silverado sales, and cited no reference for that number. Not sure I'm following your rationale.

If you don't think the 285hp/305 ft lbs torque (297hp/330ft lbs E-85) the new 4.3l offers is any different than the 195hp/260ft lbs the 2013 4.3l produced, I think you need to look up your primary school math teachers.

 

The new 4.3l with it's six speed is a better truck than the last gen 4.8ls with their 4 speeds. (and has a higher tow capacity with 3.42 gears than the current 5.3l with the standard 3.08 gears)

 

Either my wife or I make enough to pay for the house/cabin/cars, so I can pretty much afford any truck. But you don't see me driving a 6.2l or a diesel 3/4 ton for the same reason I don't shoot ducks with a ten gauge- I fit my tools to their jobs.

 

As far as speed goes, I certainly don't drive a truck for that. The 6.2l is the only one that comes close to being "fast".

    • I have a 2018 Silverado Custom with 156k on the odometer. In the last month I've replaced the plugs, wires and the driver side engine mount. My wife just returned from a trip of about 1500 miles and told me the brakes are making a grinding noise when applied. I drove it and looked it over and this is what I found with the driver's side rear rotor.   I'm going to order new pads and check about having the rotor resurfaced. Hopefully this is easier than the last 2 jobs.   Peace  
    • Any update if the new valve cover help with the oil consumption?  I have a 2014 GMC sierra and my truck is consuming a lot of oil so I’m wondering if replacing the driver side valve cover will stop some of the oil consumption. Thanks 
    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
