V-6 horrible fuel mileage

Bought a 2014 v6 Sierra reg cab long bed work truck. Has less than 9000 miles. Bought it to save wear and tear on the big duramax beating around town. Would assume it would get between 18-24 like gm says it should. I have averaged 13.5 mpg on the last four tanks of fuel. I just well be driving a 3/4 6.0... What is everyone else getting in town and or combined?

My son just bought a 2015 Sierra, V6. He is averaging 20-21 mpg combined city/highway. (Every time I've been in his truck, that's what his "Last 50" is showing).

A lot depends on how you drive. I think he drives pretty conservatively, fairly slow acceleration after stops, drives the speed limit, times lights, etc.

I know a couple guys that drive aggressively, hard acceleration, speeding, NASCAR style  , etc., and their mileage sucks!

Stock I was averaging 20-22 combined, I haven't had new tires on long enough to figure out my current average mileage yet. According to the DIC I am still pretty close, but prefer to calculate by hand over several fill ups.

I get 15.5 with a level and 305-55-20. Calculating gallons filled up by how miles on trip. Something ain't right on your truck. Shoot something ain't right In mine. No tune or anything, speedometer is not calibrated for the 33s

isn't around 14 the going rate around town? I know my denali 6.2 will be about 14 till I go on the hwy and then it jumps up real quick, all city would probably be around 14 maybe less. No idea about the v6 but wouldn't expect any of the bigger trucks to get better than 14 around town especially if you have a heavy foot.

If you had a 6.0 you would be getting 11 or less imo

What kind of driving do you do? Map out your daily route. See how many miles you go, then also count how many stop lights and stop signs, or turns that require slowing down/accelerating.

In my experience, I used to do a 11 mile trip to work, 11 miles home. I could average about 16 mpg in my truck (I have a 5.3). But there were 11 stop signs/stop lights on that route. So it was difficult to maximize gas mileage.

13.5 does sound low, but not totally out of the question if you are in heavy stop and go, or floor it every time.

I have a stock work truck with cover on bed. I get 20 MPG around town and some highway. I get 24-25 MPG on highway driving the speed limit. Truck has 1,000 miles on it. I will say mine idles a little rough when cold. Is anybody else seeing the rough idle?

My driving style is the truck is, my ign Start 20 times per day. Mostly all in town small town driving! It's a white V6 long bed so I am not hot roding around, I'm working, making trips to the lumberyard etc. it is not loaded down with weight. I pull a zero turn around for a couple miles on Sunday. Very light trailer!. The first tank of gas that got 13.5 included 140 mile trip on the highway. The last 120 mile trip on the highway I noted 20 miles per gallon on the DIC. A tank of gas many last me two weeks, so that's a lot of taking off from a stop over those two weeks. When got the truck with 7500 miles it showed an average of 14.5, I believe, on the DIC. The truck is a theft recovery, so maybe it's still recovering from having the crap drove out of it!..lol

I think it's your usage rather than something wrong.

Take it on a little road trip to see.

I agree, take it on a 4 lane road with a 55 mph speed limit for 50 miles or so and see what you get. My 5.3 ext cab actually does worse around town than my 2002 4.8 liter with 4.10 gears but I still get around 15 mpg. On a 55 mph road I usually get around 20 mpg (my old truck got 18 mpg).

I agree 100%. Lots of short trips, town driving, frequent stops, stop signs.... all will kill gas mileage.

As others have suggested, do a 50 mile highway trip at 65mph, and I will add this... Use the cruise control. You should be between 22-24 under those circumstances.
