5.3 vs 6.2

I got 21.8mpg today on ~200 mile trip today in my 6.2L. Pretty happy with those #'s.

IMHO, these threads get too involved...

 

Look - we all have different needs/wants. Most of the folks I know have the 5.3L/3.42 and tow fairly large travel trailers without issue and feel the trucks do an outstanding job of it.

 

Does the 6.2L have more power and do a better job of it, probably so for the simple fact of "there is no replacement for displacement". I think over the long haul, you will get better MPG out of the 5.3L, but we didn't buy full size trucks for their MPG's did we.

 

I have the 5.3L and love it. I knew of the 6.2L, but didn't really want it. No real reason, I just feel the 5.3L is a great motor. I honestly "wanted" a 2500 (just so I can say I have one :happysad: ), but as a daily driver the 1500 is much much better.

I know, for me, it was the added cost. I am happy with the SLE version but would have had to go with an SLT to get the 6.2l. Plus buying premium fuel. Price difference didn't work for me.

I would have gotten the 6.2 if they offered it in the LT package truck. I gave $30,460 for my 5.3 ccsb 2wd. Just to get a 6.2 the priced jumped to about $42,000. Couldn't justify an extra $12,000. My gas mileage on the interstate is around 26mpg with the cruise set at 68mph on a 500 mile trip.

I wanted a RCLB W/T, love the 8' bed, 34 gallon fuel tank and 5.3 engine. It tows great and I don't have to stop at gas stations very often :)

What about towing using E85? I know fuel mileage would be out the window but doesn't E85 up the HP of the 5.3 to 383 and torque to 400+. Seems like it would solve the 'power problem' temporarily.

The problem with this is it really reduced your overall available range and e85 is hard to find. Towing on e85 will net you less than 10mpg, so on a 25(or 26) gallon tank that's really a piss poor range. So if you are towing anywhere out of town this really makes it hard to maintain. Here in North Texas as soon as you leave the DFW area e85 is pretty much impossible to find.

 

I run e85 as much as I can when I stay in the DFW, even then I have to plan out when I will fill up since e85 stations are far and few in between. If I'm anywhere near half a tank and am near an e85 pump I will go ahead and fill up, much easier than trying to find one when I'm running low.

That is what I really hate about the '14+ trucks. I bought a leftover '13 rather than a '14 solely because the 6.2L was no longer available on the LT/SLE trucks. When the 6.2 was only a $2k increase over an equivilant 5.3 truck, it was a no brainer option, especially when it included a much stronger rear axle. That kind of $/HP ratio can't be touched in the aftermarket!

5.3 regardless of fuel/ethonal is not going to touch the power of the 6.2, they are basically the exact same design, the extra displacement is flat going to have more power.

 

The 5.3 will pull anything the chassis is capable of, the 6.2 just gets up to speed and maintains it better while putting a smile on your face.

 

For my money a tuned 5.3 would work.

There is no E85 in my area at all. I think there is one station in the Greater Vancouver area, but it really has not made it up to Canada at all.

I bought the 6.2 for the smile per mile.......not miles per gallon.....I pulled a 27" contender with a late 70's 305 that had 195 hp.......so all the new trucks are effectively overkill....a diesel is nice but waaayyyy overkill for a boat......

And the best part I love with most guys I see... they have a moderate load of a trailer for the truck and yet when they hit a hill it's the same drop in speed that they had running a 200 hp throttle body 350 truck. 60 mph at the bottom and 40 mph if you are lucky climbing. ... It's annoying passing modern trucks pulling a 6000 lb trailer that can't maintain any speed on a hill. If you want to drive that slow buy your 25 year old heap back so you have an excuse... The hills I generally drive and see this on I pull on too... and no, they have zero excuse to go that slow beyond being an obstruction to traffic.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
