Thought dry firing was not great for the gun

Modern centerfire guns can handle dry fire just fine. Not rimfire guns. Get some snap caps if it makes you feel better.

If I were you, I would purchase a few snap caps just to be safe.

I have personally seen several different broken breechblock roll pins in Sig pistols from people dry firing these pistols. They are far too expensive to be taking chances. I've also seen a few M&P's and Glocks with the breech cracked from dry firing. You can do it, but I use snap caps for safety.

Usually as long as your gun doesn't have a magazine disconnect safety you can dry fire it. Check the manual regardless it should tell you if you can dry fire or not.
