Need a straight answer about LED Headlights

Hey guys,

 

I know there are some topics on this already but I just need a straight answer from some people who actually have these set ups. Maybe some pics of what the truck looks like with it also?

 

Im looking to swap my headlight bulbs out with LED or HID. Im going to be honest I don't know much about either but I want something that will last a long time and won't cause a fire in my truck hah. Id also like it to be a good brand. I don't want the lights to be too blue at all more of a nice clean white if I can?

I installed XD led headlight bulbs and fogs. The led bulbs are a little brighter than stock and much better color. With the fogs and headlights both on its much better than stock. Overall it's brighter but not a lot brighter however the looks and color are much better.

Cool thanks man Ive heard that they need time to warm up though is that true? Which ones did you go with?

I've got the XD headlights and like them much better than stock. I've also got the VLED fogs (they have fans) that have 3000 lm and they really help a lot. No warm up time for leds.

I recently installed Vleds Hi/Low/Fog bulbs. hey are bright as hell and not scattered. Only downside is you have to run them with the dust covers off. Im working on something for this though.

Check this website and give them a call. http://www.downsouthkustomstx.com/ Put their HID system on my truck about nine months ago. No problems and nice bright lights, like they should have been from the factory. Also, everything fit inside the OE headlight assy. Only had to drill a hole in the bulb cap for the wires and grommet. One other thing I really like about this vendor, he connects every bulb and harness prior to shipping to make sure everything works. That is a nice touch.

Does anyone have any pictures of these on their trucks with some bulb specs? Im thinking of going with a 6000k so I'm especially interested in those. I want to make sure that they match the lights that come down from my mirrors :)

HIDS put out more light than LED.

I run a JW Speaker LED on my Harley. If I could fit a HID kit in my little headlight, I would switch.

LED will also lose intensity over a period of time.

 

I went with the Morimoto 5500k kit in my truck. Very nice..

6000k will be crystal white and slightly blue.

IMHO, I personally think every manufacturer's kelvin numbers slightly vary.

Close, but not exact.

High Intensity Discharge HID Kit

The visible light spectrum is divided up by a characteristic called Color Temperature. Color temp is defined by the temperature of an ideal black body radiator that radiates light equal to its surface temperature. A black body is an object that absorbs all light and emits light dependent on its surface temperature. To boil it down into simple terms, Color Temperature is the color code given to a particular light source based on how we perceive it with human eyes. This code is stated in units of absolute temperature, Kelvin (K). For example, the suns color temperature at midday is listed as 5780K (bright white), however this is not precise. You will see the suns color rated anywhere from 4300K to 6500K depending on the sources used and how much light the black body radiator could absorb during testing.

Many people believe that color temperature of an HID light is based on how bright it is (higher the K rating, brighter it gets), this is false. The higher the Kelvin temperature rating, the more blue/violet the light becomes and the less useable light output there is. Higher color temperatures are known as cool colors (5000K and up) and produce bluish white to violet light while lower color temperatures (5000K and down) are called warm colors and produce yellowish white to red. Below is a chart depicting most of the color temperatures available for HID lights.

Color Temp Color Description 3000K Yellow Emits a yellow light. Often used in place of halogen fog lamps. 5000K Pure White Emits a pure white light. This is the color of choice for most car manufactures and can be found equipped on a wide range of vehicles. Used if you want the most light output and the best performance. 6000K Crystal White Emits a pure white light with a very subtle hint of blue, this is the most popular color choice for aftermarket HID installs. 8000K Light Blue Emits a more blue light than 6000K but is not defined as true blue because it has a hint of white. 10,000K Blue Emits a dark blue light output that is close to violet in the color spectrum. Visibility is significantly decreased. 12,000K Violet Emits a violet/purple light. This color has the least light output and should not be used for nighttime driving.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
