Onstar Subscriptions - Second Question Added

When I spoke with Onstar, during the setup, they told me that the app doesn't require a subscription after the trial period. Basically, GM provides you with 5 years of access for the app.

 

Can anyone else confirm this???

I am pretty sure I pay 34.99 a month for the plan where they send an emergency vehicle if you don't answer after a crash. Plus i pay $12.00 a month for 100 cellular minutes. I want cancel the $34.99plan and just have the 100 minutes a month but am worried I'll need that plan the day after i cancel it, lol.

Do they offer any discounts like Sirius? I'll probably get the plan that sends an alert in an accident and maybe the one that tracks the vehicle if it's stolen. But I'm not paying more than $15 a month because that is what it is worth to me.

My truck is a 2010 and i just got a FREE hardware upgrade from 2G to 4G LTE cell coverage or whatever. And wifi that i never had before. Big deal i will never use it after my Free 3gigs of data expires in 3 months. After that upgrade i pushed the onstar button and had to set up a password and crap. Then i got scammed into the 35 a month after asking about the cheapest plan. That is the cheapest plan. I think the vehicle tracking is even more money. If you get it for 15 bucks you are a better wheeler and dealer than i am. I managed to get 240 free cell minutes out of the deal.

If the plan cost wasn't prohibitively overpriced I would at least get the basic plan. But for what you get it isn't worth it to me. Same thing with the xm/Sirius. I've got too many other choices for music( Pandora, Amazon prime music, my own via usb drive, plus the regular old radio)

Zero need for the service although the monthly updates are cool. Letting XM expire as well, it's decent in the car but works like garbage on my computer so Pandora wins.

I just let my trial expire. I don't see the value in it for what they charge, seems high. I hardly ever even use the free app. But I didn't have factory installed remote start which is the one thing I see it being useful for. The one thing that bothers me now is the what seems like once a month onstar advertisement that just comes out my speakers shortly after a startup.

Personally the only reason I would subscribe to OnStar is if my vehicle was essentially my mobile office. Right now I drive several miles to work each way and thats it. Maybe a couple trips to Atlanta but nothing worry of a $40/month subscription. Same goes for XM radio too.

I'm glad this is a topic.. I too don't understand the whole onstar thing with calling and wifi. I can see the need for turn by turn but everything else is covered in most cell phone plans. I set up a hotspot and let people use my data on my phone. Using wifi in a vehicle doesn't really make sense in most cases.

I too have trouble wrapping my head around the value proposition of Onstar's offering. In that regard, I updated the poll with an additional question regarding the larger market.

I do want to like on-star but they let me down with directions time and time again....just Monday I was driving from Philly to Tyson's Corner, VA. Oh they got me there, just through DC at 5-6PM.

I never understood the need for onstar cell minutes or data. My 2016 is 4G and came with a bunch of data for the free trial. I told the onstar guy to not even bother activating the free data. If I need to make my truck a hotspot for others ( which I have never done) I can hit one button on my smartphone.

 

As for the onstar cell minutes.. I can't see that thing working any better in remote places than my Verizon phone.

I think the biggest benefit of the onstar minutes and data is reliability. Lets face it in the middle of nowhere a satellite connect is fsr superior than a cellaur tower connection. Other than that I don't see much advantage as you guys are right. About 70% of mobile phone users now have smartphones and these phones also require data connections.
