Onstar Subscriptions - Second Question Added

Just looked at email says "Ask for Holiday Pass" advisor will reactivate system for 3 months, with no obligation to continue. It includes Turn by Turn, 30 min a month and roadside assistance. Hope this helps.

Mine trial just expired, app still works but is limited to Key Fob only. I miss the Vehicle Status, but that requires update plan. Not worth it to me.

I was split between No, just need the app, and No, I don't even use the app. Seems the app has only worked about 50% of the time. Basically, when I've been in range for the keyfob to work, the app has worked. Almost every time I've tried to do something outside the range of the keyfob, the app command has failed. It's more of a novelty item anyway, I don't really find it that useful.

 

As for OnStar in general, their plans are way too expensive for what you get, IMO. I think their tiers should be $5, $10, and $15 rather than $20, $25, $35. I'd sign up for the full package at $15/mo, but no way at $35. Minutes and Data plans? Forget about it. Way, way, waaaaaayyyy too overpriced, I'll just use my cell phone

That seems strange. My app has worked anywhere I have cell phone coverage. I have locked my truck doors from hundreds of miles away.

That's disappointing... I thought the vehicle status was part of the GM base system.

When you guys say turn by turn do you mean ringing on star and getting directions or the navigation on the radio. The only thing I really use the radii for is Sirius, radio and navigation if needed. The app is useful as I am prone to looking keys in my cars so having the app to unlock the car is great. I was thinking letting the trial lapse if I get to keep the app to start, unlock and lock and also the nav on the head unit. My wife's Mercedes has Nav built in and you just have it. No need for a subscription to use it

It is my understanding that the Nav is a subscription service with ontstar. The radio is just the input/output of the service.

Wow that sucks. I mean my phone can do it plus have the aux plugged in to really hear it but other vehicles out there is just standard...no sub needed

 

Does the phone app to lock, unlock and start it still work or is that canceled as well

For what it's worth.... I trust my phone's directions much more than Onstar's. The navigation feature I will not miss.

I believe the Nav system will still work. The Onstar part is, you will no longer be able to push the Onstar button and ask them to download directions to a specific address while driving. You'll have to park and manually enter the info into the Nav unit.

One instance I can say was likely due to bad cell signal. The other, maybe there was something blocking the signal to the truck? It's funny, I can play around with it all day and it works... but the few times when I've actually, seriously wanted to use the app, is when it has failed.

Just so you guys know, if you download the app on your phone for the key fab/diagnostics/etc, you can keep using it after the free onstar trial ends. As long as you download it during your subscription, you get to use it for free, for life! Thats a cool little thing my salesman told me. Dont waste your money to continue your subscription, if you only want the app

It appears that by using the remote app just once you get to continue the service for 5 years from date of purchase of the truck:

"An active OnStar Directions & Connections or Safe & Sound service plan is required to access most RemoteLink features. However with 2014 OnStar equipped vehicles, when you download and use RemoteLink just once during your OnStar trial or consecutive subscription, you'll unlock access to the RemoteLink Key Fob Services, including Remote Start,⁹ Remote Door Lock⁸ and Remote Horn and Lights, for five years from date of vehicle delivery."
