Vehicle Ordering

I build a ford using the tool on ford.com and sent the spec sheet to several dealers and I got tired of repeatedly answering questions about what options I wanted I. The info I sent them had every detail spec'd out and I received call after call of dealers asking me what features I wanted. I told them I wanted the truck that I had built. They seemed to completely ignore the fact that I sent it and only noted "I see that you are interested in an F150...". Some even going as far as telling me they had the truck I wanted in stock and try to get me to go in. When I asked them to confirm certain options (there were 2 or 3 options that I needed, and it didn't make sense for me to buy a truck without), they would tell me to go in and they can dealer locate the truck I'm looking for when I got to the dealer.

I understand the value of having the customer visit the dealership to deal, but I knew the truck I was looking for is practically a unicorn and I'd have to order one. I let them that I didn't want to waste their time (or mine) if they did not have the truck I was looking for or could not get one on the lot for me to test drive. Dealers just didn't seem interested in going that route - literally avoiding the topic of ordering altogether.

I just went to the GM site and built my 2016 Siverado High Country 3500 Crew Cab Duallie 4x4 with the 6.0. Then I sent that build sheet to 3 different sales managers of nearby GM dealers asking for a quote and gave them the Vin of my excellent 08 Dually LTZ Duramax which was the best truck I ever owned.

Good dealers will give you a trade value pending a live inspection. The dealer that gave me the best quote won my business and I was told 7 to 10 weeks for delivery. Mine came in at exactly 7 weeks. It was assembled in the Flint Michigan plant and I have only had it for 12 days and could not be more pleased. I have a 15 Mazda 3 GT that was built in Japan and the fit and finish of my 2016 Silverado Is every bit as good. All the HD models are assembled in the US and I really like that I am supporting Americans that are making good wages.

Some of the 1500s are assembled in Mexico. The first number in the Vin tells you the country where the vehicle was built. 1 is US 2 is Canada and 3 is Mexico. The reason I did not get another Duramax was the fact that my 6.0 Duallie has a 760 pounds of extra payload than the same model with a Duramax. Yes the diesel tows much more but the gasser hauls more and I have a heavy camper now where I used to haul a heavy fiver before.

When you build a vehicle on the GM website you find out some trim levels are not available on some models.

For example the High Country trim is only available on crew cabs. Good luck is getting your next Truck.

At what point did you agree on a price ?

Before signing anything or giving a deposit.

As others have posted, I've always found that dealer is willing to order the truck I spec without signature or deposit.

Like the others the order process is simple However.....

When I ordered mine my salesman who was great really dropped the ball on adding some of the accesories i wanted.

Like most I built my truck 40 different ways on gm's website so I knew exactly what i wanted, but the dealers order form is a bit different so WE had to guess as to what they called it or worded the options.

I WANTED chrome 6in running boards and black molded mud flaps.

I GOT Black running boards and black chevy emblems front and rear.

The interior stuff was exactly how i wanted it, but when he sent me a picture the day it came in he had to scramble and pull mud gaurds and chrome steps off a truck they had on there lot so I could pick the truck up that day. He made it right, but I technically paid for cheaper running boards and the black emblems. .

You should have had him print you off the sheet with the options that were selected, then you could have went home and cross checked the pro codes to make sure it was correct.

That is what I did to ensure everything was correct.

I agree. Live and learn. It was the first truck I had ever had to order to get what I wanted. I put a little too much trust in my sales guy.

Yeah the ordering process was a little stressful, because the dealers order sheet looks nothing like what the online build is.

They printed off the workbench order for the Silverado and I went over it with a fine tooth comb for about 15min before he hit submit.

It went a little easier the 2nd time around with the Sierra because I printed off the rpo and lpo build sheets and was able to supply rpo codes of everything I wanted, but even then a few options were tough for him to find. And that was done through email and a few phone calls, so I just had to trust him that much more

I never had to worry about prices, as I get gms, which is non negotiable. I price shopped other dealers without my gms, and the best one still came back $1800 higher than gms. At least in my area, they just don't budge too much on HD's

I'm looking at a Sierra 2500HD SLE - adding Leather, convience package, roof lamps, trailering mirrors, and sprayed on bedliner. So hopefully it would be a pretty simple order as far as options and not go too crazy! Not going for any the accessories from GM, I would like to add running boards and a bed cover but I'll be doing that myself.

I placed an order for a 1500 LTZ Z71 last friday (1/29)

At this point it has been accepted into the system but hasn't been assigned a TPW. Does anyone have an idea of how long it might be until they give a TPW?

I'll update as I hear more about order statuses.

I did my 2015 2500 via the internet. I researched all the available trucks that had the options and color I wanted within a 100 mile radius of me. The dealer I chose, had a "internet" price that was pretty good compared to MSRP. I tracked down dealer who had it and sent a note. On the phone confirmed that it was what I was looking for. They even took more off and thru in a free Line-X bed liner job to sweeten the deal. Drove the 60 miles to them and got one of the best sales experiences I had in a long time. It was exactly what I was wanting, and got it for almost 20% off MSRP. Was not even during one of those end of year closeout or truck month promotional things. Their service dept, which I talked to during the deal, left a lot to be desired. No problem. I don't really use dealerships for service, and if that need should come up, there is a dealer about 15 miles from me that has a decent service dept.

One vehicle I wanted back in '06, a Jeep Liberty Diesel, the closest one that had everything I wanted was about 300 miles away. My local dealer had it brought to me, without a firm commitment on my part, and struck a pretty good deal on it, so I got it. I do love modern technology some times.

DOSP - Dealer Order Submission Process

The weekly process consists of 4 stages.

1. Constraints Distribution - Dealers are informed on constraints to review before placing orders. (A Constraint is a limit placed on specific build configurations.)

2. Dealer Order Submission - Dealers can order on Thursday, Friday or no later than midnight on Saturday. (You can submit orders earlier but you don't know the constraints.)

3. The 4-Pass Process - GM will attempt to place each dealer’s orders on Mondays using a 4-Pass process. (At this point a dealer may get more or less than was allocated, if they asked.)

4. Dealer Review - You can review your placed orders for changes or replacements until Tuesday at 9pm ET. That's when the orders are sent to production control.

So I placed my order on Friday the 29th. as of this morning it is still at 1100.

Looking at your post, does that mean that it could sit in the step 3 process you said above for multiple weeks until they get their allocation?
