Why The Chevy/GMC ?

TBH, I was looking for a 2-3 year old F-150 with under 30,000 miles, 1/2 ton, 4x4, heated seats, crew cab. They were in the mid to upper $30K range.

 

Happened by my local GMC dealer and noticed they had a handful of leftover 2015's on the lot with huge rebates on them. Long story short, I picked up a brand new GMC 1500 SLE 4x4 double cab in Onyx black with heated seats for the less than the used F-150's I was considering.

 

What really sealed the deal for me was: A) The cabin is sooooo quiet. I love it! B) Styling. GMC's are bad assed looking.

Brand loyalty, first car was a Chevy, other car is a Gm. Don't like the look of the ford's. Also I like the sound of the GM starter/ignition over ford and Dodge (weird I know). The GM ls family engines are also what I consider to be some of the best around. Didn't even consider a foreign made truck (Toyota/Nissan)

Know what you mean. I can hear a ford starter and know its a ford without seeing it.

My dad's pretty much always been a Chevrolet/Cadillac guy, so I got started early . He had 97 Suburban that I loved, and that thing was as reliable as the sunrise. Traded it for an 03 Escalade ESV, and that thing was a TANK. Hit 7 deer and got sideswiped by a motorcycle, didn't even shrug. The 8th deer busted the trans cooler, and fried the transmission. He sold it to a service writer at the local dealer, who rebuilt it. That ESV still roams Gillette. That was icing on the cake for getting a GM truck. Was looking at 07s with the 6.0, and then the new generation came out. Incredible interior, and IMHO one of the best looking trucks Chevrolet has ever made. Found one exactly like I wanted and even got a nice discount in the process!

Well, I've been driving GM trucks since 1975, std cab in line 6, very basic. Then, my wife went through four Suburbans during our kid raising years. Guess I like the way the GM's sit, dash layout, engines, etc. also, don't know why, guess it's just me, I've always been able to get better deals from GM and Chevy dealers. For many years I sometimes wouldn't even bother to drive one before buying, especially my wife's Suburbans. Just asked her what color she wanted and bought her the loaded version (happy wife happy life, lol). But, I did go to the trouble of driving a Ram, F-150 before going to the Chevy dealer nearby. Test drove a 2015 LTZ CC 6.2L 4x4, came back to the lot and told the salesman who I knew from a previous buy, let's deal. It was 2015 Memorial weekend and there were specials going. So, offered $8,750 off MSRP. Being the old horse trader that I am and enjoy the back and forth. I told him he had a deal if he would throw in the running boards. He did the usual squirm, and offered to split the cost with me. So, I agreed to that which was another $375 to me. I know, others have done better but I was happy. Btw, the truck is great and really enjoy the ease that the 6.2 tows my camper. Anyway, that's my story

This is the first pickup truck I've ever owned. I've owned over 27 vehicles over the years (Mostly Jeeps, Subarus and VWs) but with some recent back issues I decided it was time to get something I fit in generally well. I'm 6'6" and not exactly small so getting out of a sedan and into this was nice.

 

My main selling point for the Sierra I ended up with was value. I couldn't justify spending $60k on a new truck so I was set on used. At first I didn't want to spend more than $20k but I quickly learned anything in that price range is either really high mileage or a beat up work truck. I looked at the last generation F150 but in the end I didn't want to spend a lot on that old design. I considered a new, left over 2015 as the 0% for the long term wasn't bad, but I couldn't find any left over 2015's with the options I wanted, either they had no options or out of my budget.

 

There are a few reasons I never considered the Dodges;

1) (petty) One side of my family all drive Dodges, and I don't get along with them

2) Styling, I really dislike the look of them

3) The Nav/Climate control system is really annoying. I hate that you have to go into the infotainment screen to change climate control setting or turn on the heated seats. Extra steps that take your eyes off the road when a simple knob, switch or button would do. I drove a Jeep Cherokee with this setup and it was very frustrating to me.

 

I also looked at Tundras but the used prices were high even with high milage. I also didn't like the fact you only get an AWD setting on the Platinum model. That's something I wanted for foul winter days.

 

That left the GM and Chevy's. I didn't know anything about them but after looking at a couple I decided the styling of the GMC was for me. I found a few with the All Terrain package and really liked the look of them. The interior design and features were nice and the smooth quiet ride sealed the deal. It did take a few weeks of getting used to after having the BMW but I'm now used to driving this behemoth around.

 

If I had to do it again I'd look for the same truck, 6.5" bed but with the full crew cab instead of the double cab. I hardly ever drive people around but the extra storage in the back would be nice since I have my seat all the way back. My truck only has 34,000km (21,000 miles) and I drive less than 10k km (6200 miles) a year so I think I'll have this for a while.

 

Know what you mean as I'm 6'4" and about 250 on a good day. I'm driving a 2015 LTZ. CC 6.2L 4x4 and drove the Rams and F-150's before buying. Even though I'm tall I like the Chevy because it sits a little closer to the ground than Ram or Ford. I can get in my LTZ without having to step up on the running board. But, with the other two trucks I do have to step up on the running boards which puts me up too high and making it a pain to bend over to get in the truck. Besides, got an artificial knee and now am a seasoned citizen so stepping up on running boards is kinda hard on the old guy
