General Motors has made it two in a row now. Both of the first trials brought to court have resulted in wins for GM. In this most recent win for GM a jury decided for the automaker in a New York case involving a 2014 accident that injured two. The prior case was tossed by the judge after the party that brought the case was found to be lying (in the eyes of the court).

The New York Times reported today that this is one of the six bellwether cases being tried to determine how a settlement or class action trial might proceed. GM commented on the case in a statement, saying “The jurors studied the merits of the case and saw the truth. This was a very minor accident that had absolutely nothing to do with the car’s ignition switch.”

I'm wondering how the first cases that get tried, the "bellwether" as you put it, are the people who really don't seem to have a case to begin with. Guessing that they are quietly settling the big ones to keep them out of the press.
