How do you tell the difference in a short bed and a standard bed without measuring?

Can you tell by the gas cap door?

Easiest way to tell is by looking at the distance between the rear of the cab and the front of the rear wheel well opening. On the short bed trucks it looks to be about 8" or so, but on the standard it appears that most of the additional 1' of length is placed there.

For me when we're talking looks alone it's in the following order:

1. Double Cab Standard Bed

2. Crew Cab Standard Bed

3. Crew Cab Long Bed Dually

4. Regular Cab Long Bed

I've never loved the Regular Cab Short Bed, or Crew Cab Standard Bed trucks, despite their being some pics on hear that make a good case for them.

For me though, with the wife and 2 kids, it's gotta be the Crew Cab Standard Bed these days. That's what my '15 Sierra 1500 was, and now my '16 Silverado 2500 is.

Appreciate the hints guys. Now I can spot what kind of bed it has a block away. Just never noticed before. I park right next to a 6'6" and a 5'8" bed every day and didn't notice till now they were different.

They both look good in their own way.

The 5'8" might look just a tick better on a crew cab but I like the fact I can throw a 6' step ladder in my 6'6" and close the tailgate. :P

That's a standard bed though... at least from the pic it does, based on the wheelbase length

Standard meaning long bed then yes you're correct Doesnt help the boat is around 33' long making the truck look tiny. Also I was a good ways away and my phone is starting to get old. Can you even get a standard bed on a crew cab dually? I thought I read somewhere that they only came with the long bed for that year/generation. Either way I hope I never go back to any of those shorter beds.

Maybe it's just the dually flares that kind of offset the look making it look like the standard 6'6" bed

I'll blame the camera and dummy that took it

That's definitely an 8 ft bed.

Agreed.

I think the tool box is contributing to the illusion that it's shorter.

I'm a crew cab std bed guy. It's a no excuses truck, except if you have a small garage. My garage is 40x40ft so I have no issues there

I agree with that . I have a CC with standard bed also and it looks well proportioned. The short bed looks like the cab is longer than the bed. When I travel I have plenty of space for cargo and 4 full sized adults have plenty of room.

I think that it looks perfect.

No such thing as anything other than a 8' bed when it's a duallie.

Might be true of Chevy/GMC, but Dodge makes one.

Just happened to be parked next to a short bed today. Our mirrors and front bumpers were dead even.

Mine is a standard bed.

Reg Cab Standard bed (race truck/ tow pig). I'm an eternal bachelor so I have no need for a CC or EC. TBH those CC short beds look ridiculous. It's basically a lifted minivan with an uncovered portion too short to put anything in. Just screams useless mall crawler to me.
