Lifting a lowered truck

Recommended Posts

Good morning yall, I'm new to the site so howdy.

I've got a 2005 Sierra 1500 crew cab that I bought about a year ago. It has what I believe to be a 2/4 drop and I want to lift it or at least get it back to stock height. Suspension is not my forte so I'm a bit lost on how to go about doing this.

Ideally i'd like to find someone stock/lifted that wants to drop theirs and just switch. In this case, what all would need to be switched?

If I can't find someone to switch with, where do I start? What all do I need?

I'm not even 100% what I've got down there (how it was dropped) but someone told me once it was "done right" so I don't think it was just a "cut and drop/hack job".

Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Attached a few photos of my current set up.

There are a few ways it could have been dropped up front. And in the rear. Front could be spindle, spring, or LCA. Rear could be any combination of shackle, hanger, or spring. If starting over i would get stock springs and spindles for the front and hangers and shackles for the rear since those are the most common

Thanks for the reply Chris. I should've mentioned before in the end i'd like to end up with a 4 or 6" lift but depending on cost that may have to wait. Should I do anything differently now knowing thats coming down the road?

Depends on the lift method. If you know that the new lift replaces say the spring and spindle up front, then hold off and do it all at once. my advice is leave it alone until you figure out your end game and then see what parts get dumped for new lift parts. So if you need new hangers or shackles, then get stock ones. Cheapest route will be to wait.

I am thinking if it was dropped that the front was done by spindle. spring and LCA appear stock. but keep in mind, they sit low as a stock 2wd.

I havent dropped mine. Stock height suspension and stock height tires

In my opinion from the pictures you posted, that truck has NOT been lowered correctly. the front end is riding the bump-stops, someone has heated or cut the coils (or both). If someone had put 2" spindles or 1" ball joints (or both) it would not change the spring travel. Comparing your shots of the rear to my 2008 you are missing a spacer between the spring and spring perch, and you did not include pictures of the shackles, but as close to the bump stop as it is in the back I'm assuming it has 2" lowering shackles. It also definitely has factory shocks on the rear, and can't tell for sure on the fronts but at any rate, riding around with the shocks completely compressed isn't good either. But to answer your original question on how to get it back up to stock or higher, at this point the cheapest way to go would be something like this...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rough-Country-239N2-4-5-inch-Lift-Kit-for-Chevy-99-06-Silverado-1500-2WD-GM-/141933544982?fits=Year%3A2005%7CModel%3ASierra+1500&hash=item210be60616:g:3g8AAOSwYmZXFqxM&vxp=mtr

I would choose that one or something like it because it includes front springs that have been ruined from heating and or cutting. Just my $0.02.

Looks to me from the pics as bubban said all your going to need is the rear stock leaf spring shackles and the stock block that goes in-between the leaf and spring perch to get the rear back to stock height.

For the front, stock height springs and maybe shocks (cant tell) on the shocks. If I were you I would go down to your local salvage junk yard and get the parts you need for cheap but if your going to do a suspension lift on a 4x2 then wait till you know what your going to do if your going lift or stock.

As far as a spindle drop, cant tell from the pics.

    • Point of the post sir was that while both wages and cost are rising EVERYWHERE; the cost is rising faster EVERYWHERE than the ability to buy EVERYWHERE. We're not going down the location rabbit hole. I'm aware of what economic migration is. I've lived in four states including Texas.   It's what "Purchasing Power" means.   I'm not telling you what I think. I'm telling what the government, your government, data shows.   It wasn't an argument. It wasn't a suggestion. It was a statement of FACT. You are absolutely entitled to your own opinion. Your not entitled to your own facts. If you and I were, they wouldn't be facts.    fact /făkt/   noun Knowledge or information based on real occurrences. • Probably a one and done post, but do you have a CEL on the dash? Was having issues with my transmission, fortunately only a week, and it turned out to be the transmission harness. Valve body was in good shape, so new harness with all the sensors attached, new fluid, and filter. Seems to have worked so far?
    • Two interesting tidbits of information which are NOT related were just released.   One, regarding the possible thrust bearing issues / engine failures with the 3.0. Demonworks just did a segment in which they believe they may have found "a" or "the" cause of thrust bearing failures: A missing thrust bearing. If the engine doesn't have all its thrust bearings from the factory, the missing bearing can cause extra play which ends up destroying a nearby thrust bearing which then sends metal through the engine.       Of other importance, Lake Speed Jr released some interest information regarding oil weight selection for the 3.0. Comparisons of:   AcDelco 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w20 Dexos D Mobil 1 ESP x2 0w30 Mobil 1 ESP x4 0w40. Mobil Delvac 5w40   Spoiler alert: The Mobils are PAO Ester -base and the ACDelco is a Group III base. Mobil shows lower wear in their tests for similar weights. Additive packages between 20-30-40 weight ESP's appear to be the same, but only 0w20 is Dexos D licensed. Wear is even more reduced with 30 and 40 weight ESP although all perform very well and resist shear and provide very similar viscosities within temperature operating ranges in the 3.0.   There are even more surprises, so just go watch it.
    • Hello Guys I'm new to the form,         I just put a 7-inch Rough Country lift on my 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 and I also put a Borla exhaust on it. But I noticed when I'm in park or in neutral and then I rev my truck up really quick there is a bad click noise and I think it's coming from the motor somewhere. Anyways I got a video of it I will attach below I was just wondering if you guys think its rod knock or lifter tick or something like that because I know the AFM kind of made the lifters weak on these trucks.       Thanks!!!!! • We’ll have to agree to disagree. I didn’t experience or know anyone who had a decent car after 100K miles in the 60s through the 80s that were daily commuter vehicles. Unless they were collector vehicles. Of course things cost more due to inflation. But we also make more money. The biggest money drains these days are things people think they need today versus what we require back in the day. Like cell phones and internet as examples. Another example is where you live. Cost of living varies from state to state. I would need twice the money to live in NJ vs Texas in retirement. The car you recently purchased was less than my first car with inflation at 3000$ in 1973. I didn’t have air, electric windows, cruise etc. Purchasing power is equivalent, you just have to do the research.
