Rust on Rancho shocks

Recommended Posts

I have a 2015 z71 with just under 6k miles now, and this surprised me to see this much surface rust on this shock. The other side one has just a but of rust on it, but this one is far worse. What are my options? I had this truck oil sprayed before winter.

You probably have no options. The red portion scrapes paint off. My 2011 did the same exact thing and my Jeep I have now does it too. The body of the shock is pretty thick so it won't rust through, it's just ugly. But even if you could get them to warranty it, they'll do the same thing.

I had an 09 this never happened too this early on in my ownership.

The shocks are cheap unfortunately. I've been told that the Rancho shocks on GMs and Ford aren't actually Rancho shocks, just OEM stuff with their logo and the automaker pays a license fee.

Exposed location where they get blasted with salt and debris from the road/wheels.......poor choice of paint for the shocks....should either be high impact paint or colored light brown instead of white to mask the rust.

They are using various chemicals (liquids) to control ice on road and bridges and this is leading to more corrosion on vehicles. You cannot do anything to stop rust. They DOT spends millions to paint and blast bridges and it only last for short time.

I don't buy that, that would look real bad on Rancho. Why would they want to tarnish their image with a shock that isn't even their with their name on it that can have problems, failures or not up to their standard? It is just their bottom line shock. Like anything at the bottom the higher level versions will be better in most cases.

People talk about how bad these are and how great Bilsteins are, anyone ever think how the base bilstein model shocks are compared to their higher level 5100+ models?

Mine has the ranchos on it,yeah they are not the best shock, but not spending 40,000 on new truck to spend another 4 or 5 hundred on shocks. When they wear out then I will.

I don't know how many of you know this but Rancho is not an individual company. They are a brand of shock under the Tenneco company who also make Monroe shocks as well as the non-Rancho shocks on GM trucks and have been for years. They also make mufflers (dyno-max, thrush, and walker) as well as other automobile stuff. Rancho is just a name put on a cheap Tenneco shock.
