Would you trade your 14+ for a Ford?

Going to look at a 2016 Dodge Power Wagon tomorrow.

I know, it's a dodge, but it's a full load trim, and the Power Wagon has so much off-road capability right out of the box. Front and rear e-lockers, 12,000 pound winch, ability to disconnect the sway bar electronically, lots of ground clearance, and you get all of that in a crew cab for the same price as a crew cab half ton from any of the big 3.

I have never owned a Dodge, driven one, or even sat in one, so I really don't know if it will be what I am looking for or not.

Well I never made it to owning a GM truck. I drove the GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate earlier this week. Exterior of the GMC is good looking to me. The retractable side steps are clunky looking but work fine. The interior is disappointing. The finish is blah and behind the times. The deal the dealer made was fair. I decided to check out a King Ranch. Power steps way nicer, power tailgate release and also a nice exterior. The interior blows away the Denali. Massaging seats, 360 degree view when backing, panoramic roof, on and on. The trucks stickered within $500 of each other. The Ford deal was $2,000 better in trade difference. So, the Ram goes away today and I'll be driving a King Ranch back to Florida Monday.

Maybe if GM does some serious upgrades with the next generation, I'll give GM another chance to earn my business next time

The GMC Denali interior is not up to the F150 Platinum. So plus for Ford. Powertrain is a plus for GMC. Right now I'm undecided which way to go. I drove a GMC Denali yesterday with the 6.2l. Nice driving but if I go with one I'll feel like I'm giving up on interior features and finish. I need the power of the GMC. Prior to actually driving the GMC I was figuring my decision would be easy picking the Denali. I was ready to swap going to the dealer yesterday. They've made me a great deal but I walked. Really not sure what I'm going to do now.

Interesting how perceptions vary. IMO the Denali interior soundly trounces the Ford Platinum interior. YMMV. Cosmetically the Ford exterior may be fairly impressive, but it's only skin-deep. On top of that, and coming from a long fleet maint background, I can tell you that Ford has habitually had problems with cracking frames, cracking cab floorpans under the seats, cracking and separating/cracking sheetmetal beds, and I'm not even getting into brakes and transmission or deeper...NO THANK YOU FORD.

I had 2 F150's 2010 and 2014, one a single cab XL and the other a Crew Cab XLT Texas Edition... Loved the interiors ( Mainly just the flat dash ), the new F150's have way too much plastic all over the place and just looks like a mess... just personal opinion. I wouldn't go back to F150 after my '15 Silverado. Had Ram, Chevy and Ford and if I wanted something else instead of my truck I would go back to Ram, although I love the interiors on the Silverado's better than all the rest as far as comfort and view.

Exactly. That's why they build them. Different strokes for different folks. I didn't even test drive the Dodge (fiat) after sitting in one. The interior felt very cheap and chincy, no touch screen, had that rotary dial for the transmission which i don't like, etc.

The leftover 14 ford i looked at was nice and ran strong, but was way less optioned and the interior wasn't as nice as my 15 Chevy and the ford would have cost me 1800 MORE than my Chevrolet! In my experience ford won't work with you like Chevrolet will. No thanks ford.

Absolutely. Yeah I forgot about the whole Fiat owning Ram now. Brother works for Ram Country in my town and I went through 3 Rams all 2014's and I loved them, but when I saw the new Silverado I had to get one. My first Ram was the Express RC that just had basic radio and simple interior and column shift ( only way a truck SHOULD come ), the other had the touchscreen which I did like and that's about it, my cummins was the same but with premium gauges and column shift. Ram is in need of an update but I have nothing bad to say about them except I HATE HATE HATE the rotary dial shifter.

My Texas Edition was only 2 thousand less than my Silverado in total, and it, like you said, was pretty basic... you really are paying for the badge on the truck. Great trucks but you get much nicer things for about the same price on Chevy and even Ram. Fords redesign is just not my taste, there is too much going on with it and it's like they put no thought whatsoever into the gauges ( I have this thing with nice gauges lol ).

Agreed. I don't like that dodge is owned by a foreign company now. Agree with you in the column shifter. I also like gages with numbers on them, not "normal" like ford does.

The other thing with dodge is they continue to have corrosion issued. A guy i work with used to be a body estimator for a dodge dealer and he told me he'd see 2-3 yr old Durangos come in with rust on the same area on the quarters already. My brother had to trade in his 07 Dakota in December of 13 (on a Silverado) because the front subframe had significant rot. Not good.

They all have pros and cons and all are decent trucks in my opinion. I have been a Ford man for several years, but i do like my Silverado a lot. I'm just not into the whole ecoboost thing. I'm also not into Japanese trucks either, but that's just me. I'm old school. I like NA American V8s in my pickups. One thing I'll give Chevrolet, you can open the hood and still see where most things are located. I like that.

My quest for a GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate 4X4 came to an end. It came down to the fact the F150 King Ranch has more features than the Denali. Living in Florida, rear A/C is important. Not available in the Denali. Push button start and proximity unlocking that was on the Ram, is on my Corvette isn't on the Denali. Not a big deal to some but it was to me. I just drove the F150 King Ranch 19 straight hours to get back from suburban Detroit to my home in Florida. The massaging seats are incredible when sitting for that long. The Sync 3 system in the F150 is better than expected. Voice commands work. Travel Link works better than in the Ram. I haven't tried the Android Auto, yet. The automatic tailgate release is a pleasant surprise. And lastly, the truck was built in Dearborn MI.

Hopefully the GMC will get much needed upgrades in the next generation.

Just drove a 2016 F-150 Lariat CC 4x2 with EcoBoost last week and wasn't too impressed. Truck drives decent but the seating position wasn't too my liking. Don't like how even with the seat lowered all the way down your shoulders and torso are "exposed" by the large window. The leather on the Ford was looking quite worn even though both my truck and it have similar mileage. The infotainment system menus were not as intuitive but work ok. My favorite features were the vented seats which seemed to work better than a friends Sierra Denali and the auto locking tailgate.

Way to much buttons going on in the Ford! I park mine next to a brand new F150 Lariat with the 5.0 V8. The guy I work with traded in a ecoboost and insisted on a V8. It looks good don't get me wrong about the Ford but the reality is it's still a Ford?

Our company replaced all Ford Trucks with Chevrolet a few years back and were talking 1000+ vehicles. There reason was 1/3 of the cost to maintain the vehicles was related to Ford Powertrain? The rest is history...........

The auto locking tailgate is on the 16 GM's also, honestly not sure if it's on all trims or not though...

I would be surprised if it wasn't on the 16 Denali's Jus Crusin was looking at.

It's for sure on the Denali, looks like it's an option on base Sierra and becomes standard on SLE and above...

Yes guys, the Denali Ultimate has auto locking tailgate. The F150 King Ranch has an automatic opening tailgate (actually drops) not just unlocking with the keyfob.

Really the Denali wins with its pure truck look. The King Ranch wins with the interior features and rear AC which is kind of important in Florida (average 110 days of 90+ a year). I really was set on the GMC but I didn't want to give up things I was used to on the Ram Limited and duplicated on the F150. I'm sure I'll be looking for something else in about 3 years. I hope GM steps it up.

I understand the difference between auto locking and auto release, my comment was directed to the person I quoted where he stated he like that feature on the Ford.

Not sure I understand the need for an auto release tailgate, enjoy showing your friends once and never using it again lol. Unless the tailgate handle is too much trouble for ya. I swear in a few years people are gonna be pissed if they are expected to lift a finger.

Forgot to add, I live in TX with plenty of hot days outta the year, cab has always cooled quickly without rear vents.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
