Is there any GM documentation anywhere about these symptoms being a torque converter issue? Because when I took my truck in for exactly the same symptoms (plus an occasional violent shudder) they took it for a spin to diagnose, acknowledged the behaviour, and then blamed it on variable engine loading like the A/C compressor cycling on and off. The dealer claimed no knowledge of any issues with the 8 speed torque converters, even when I specifically brought that up.

Update. Picked up my truck last night after new trans and navigation update . Omg it's worse. I now have delayed engagement when cold. Wine from 4 5 6 gear and of course the consistent banging . It's almost like they put a 14 trans in with all the older truck isuues. My navigation is frozen showing me that I'm in Detroit. Maybe the truck is telling me it wants to go home lol. My arbitration is in a couple weeks. I'll report back. Very sad. What a great engine. What a great truck. What an awful transmission.

Im currently trying to find a way to make my dealer investigate more than the saying "yeah we heard of the issue and there is nothing we can do". BULLS*$& lol. I'm not settling for that statement. I want my truck fixed and fixed right.

So it appears this situation has come to a head. Gm has agreed to give trade in assistance. Meaning, I will receive a full refund for my truck all the way up to the original Msrp towards a new truck. I am satisfied with this result. I plan on replacing my truck with a 2500hd diesel. I am not too happy with the roughly extra 12 grand I will be coughing up but nothing beats a diesel for towing resale value ect. I came out of a 2008 duramax that I purchased new and that truck NEVER did anything over the course of 8 years and 80k miles to cause any concern or any reason to visit a dealer. After which I sold that truck for 30 grand! For those who are having trouble with their trucks/dealers my advice is starting calling. Then call. Then call some more. Always remain diplomatic. I never cursed or raised my voice. It took 8 months to get this resolved with a shit ton of b.s.. missing camping trips. "Tow vehicle in the shop" Missed days at work. Hours on the phone at home/work. Nonsense paperwork ect. I still love gm trucks and cars but I think their dealers and executive's are stuck in 1970s with the way they conduct business. I've owed somewhere around 20 general motors vehicles 9 purchased new. This one is the first one that a major component had given me any trouble. That being said it didn't break down or leave me stranded. Deals not done yet. I'll let you all know how it works out.

I wish you luck with the arbitration....been there done that!

After 10 dealership visits,2 new transmissions,3 torque converters and countless software re learns. The BBB still sited with GMC. Unbelievable!!!!Even some field engineer worked on my truck which at that time my truck was in the shop for 30 days alone...my truck has been in the dealership a total of 56 days in one year of owning it.The BBB arbitration was a joke some old guy in his 70's drove my truck around the block a hard clunk was felt, when I spoke up in the passenger seat to tell him that's what I feel daily,he said there is no comments to be made during test drive. The field engineer and area Rep. for GMC were in the back seat smiling. So like I said I wish you luck!

Call me crazy, but I kind of miss the old 4 speed trans from years past. They did a torque converter trick that made them act like an 8 speed. Boy were they smooth as silk in most driving. Not nearly as nimble though.

I had a 2008 Silverado CC 5.3/4sp, put 160k miles on it, pulled a 6,000lb TT on occasion. Never had any problems with the tranny it was rock solid. However, 4 gears just wasn't enough for towing. I would be towing at 65mph (sweet spot for my 5.3) and when going up a minor grade such as an overpass the tranny would shift down to 3rd causing the engine to rev up to about 4,500 rpm or more. So, to avoid this I had to learn to feather the gas pedal so avoid the down shift. This constant attention to driving was tiring and was a lot of work. Sooo, bought a 2015 Silverado CC LTZ 6.2/8 spd. Had the 2-1 downshift 1-2 upshift problem for awhile, usually when cold making first drive of day. But, had the dealer do the relearn trick on the tranny which fixed the problem, only happens occasionally now. However, I can live with it considering the way the 6.2/8 spd tows. That's what the setup was built for, a real pleasure to road trip towing my TT now.

Same here

Had an '08 5.3/4spd

then an '11 6.2 / 6spd way better power and trans worked great

But this '17 6.2/8spd is fantastic towing

Our TT is about 8500#

I'm one of the lucky ones with the clunking and lunging 8 speed transmissions. The dealer has been great. They replaced the torque converter and just replaced the valve body. Not to mention resetting the learning 3 times. It's still doing the same thing. My next step is to get them to replace the TCM and the transmission. Is there a fix? Has anyone had luck with getting this problem solved? My truck is a 2015 All Terrain 6.2.

Im curious who has 2017 with 8 speed issues. I'm starting too think that maybe the big diesel isn't for me but I'm really concerned I'm be getting same problem. It's the only reason why I'm concidering the diesel in the first place. Have no need for it and I really liked my 6.2.

Got a question; being your TT weighs about 8,500 lbs, your getting close to the upper limit of 9,100 lbs capacity for the 1500. Obviously, you use a weight distribution hitch. Do you also happen to have any type of air lift system on your truck as well? Im planning on having the Air Lift load lever system along with wireless compressor installed after the first of the year. So, looking for opinions on this.

I have considered air bags but truck works well as is, but may revisit in the future

it is also an NHT truck so the GVW is 7,900 and tow rated for 12,500
