dorkweed Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 On how well my brand new 2016 towed my work trailer today. I've been in the diesel world for 20+ years now; and, I was impressed with how my new 2016 Silverado gasser with 5.3 and 6speed auto handled my work trailer!!! Been keeping the truck in M5 to keep it out of V4 mode since I took ownership........................towed in M5 also.................nice. No problem using M5 around suburbia here.....................consule display was reading 19.8 until I drove 40+ miles with the trailer behind........................now it's just reading 19.6. Have yet to drive the truck in "D" mode!!! I do understand that these "Lie-O-Meters" are not very accurate also. Looking into the "Range" device to keep my truck out of V4 mode when on the interstate highways traveling 60+mph. Seems M5 is perfect for my area of suburbia................
thewhitestallion Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Glad to hear! What were you towing? What was the weight?
dorkweed Posted July 20, 2016 Author Posted July 20, 2016 Glad to hear! What were you towing? What was the weight? My work trailer which runs around 3500lbs. Single axle 6x10.
Donstar Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Why do you keep it out of v4? X2? I regularly pulled a similar trailer up until last year and would use tow/haul mode if the trailer was loaded. V4 mode was never an issue.
Silvern Sentry Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Some crazy dude on 'that other forum' was towing a 30ft' 5th wheel with his 2016 1500. Could not believe it, coming from BC that seems like an accident waiting to happen to me. But we do have a lot of mountains 'round these here parts.
dorkweed Posted July 21, 2016 Author Posted July 21, 2016 Rather than start a new thread; I figured I'd just continue here. I filled my new truck up with fuel today for the first time. 548 miles on the tank of fuel...................display was saying 19.4mpg average fuel economy..............hand calculated mileage worked out to an even 19mpg. I'm impressed so far, as I've never driven a full sized gasser pickup that got mileage this good, this new!!!! Truck only has 556 miles on her now!!! All this tank was driving in M5 around my suburbia. Had 1 short jaunt of about 25 miles on the interstate...........but kept it in M5 and at 60mph. Also had about 40 miles towing my work trailer. Happy so far.

Diver6 Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 Ya that makes no sence, just put in tow/haul mode and let the truck do its thing, you will probably get better mileage.
MrNasty Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 I turned AFM off and couldn't be happier. I didn't like the hesitation from the constant switching. I wanted a V8 not a 4 banger. Guess I should have looked into it more before I got a GM gasser. I thought it only happened at highway speeds. I will be going back to diesel after this truck and doubt I will keep this one long enough for the bumper to bumper to expire.
TJay74 Posted July 27, 2016 Posted July 27, 2016 GM is not the only using displacement on demand, Dodge has it on their trucks and has for years now.

I doubt the hesitation you are noticing is the changing from V8 to V4 mode, My V6 can haul a similar load smoothly. Your truck may need to go in for service.
MrNasty Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 I guess I shouldnt have said constant. It just feels that way, but when just cruising on city streets it switches to v4 and yea when I try to accelerate slightly to change lanes or pass there is a lag in performance. Thats what Im referring to. I dont like it, but at least Gm did seem to finally fix oil consumption because of AFM. At least it seems so. Like I said Im just used to the skinny pedal reacting a little better in previous trucks. So I will have to switch back as soon as I can and then my AFM problem is solved for sure.
