After Stock Approach Angle

Recommended Posts

Just curious, we know stock with the stock valance the approach angle on these trucks is pretty pitiful at 17.9 degrees; but what about after some modifications? What is it with the valance removed and stock height? What about after a level (1.5", 2", 2.5"...) and tires (32.5", 33", 33.5", 34", ect). Rear is 23.3, what about after a 2 inch block and the same upsize tires?

Just curious if anyone has done this. Can use a sheet of plywood and a protractor or a rough estimate with a side picture and an online protractor or I am sure there are other ways. Would be nice to see numbers approaching upper 20's with some common changes (2 inch level and 33) with stock valance either removed or trimmed. Stock F150 is around 25 degrees and Tundra 26,

Guess no one has checked this? When I get my 1.5 level and 265/70/18 I will see about checking this. Thought with the amount of people that use these trucks in the back country/fields and lift/level them someone would have checked this...

I would like to know what it takes to get my truck with a 29 degree approach angle compared to the stock 18 degree.

My taco worked great stock at 29 degree on my local trails. I'm discovering the Silverado is sitting to low for comfort on trails. 10 degree difference I'm guessing would make the difference. Stock height is 8.5 vs 9.5 Toyota.

To the top in case anyone has been able to check this. More curiousity than anything. Just saw a review of the Titan Pro-4x and it has low-mid 20's approach angle but it comes with just over a 33 inch tire (275/70/18) stock and 9.8 inches of ground clearance (about an inch more than us but mostly attributed to the tires I bet). I am going to be happy going to a 265/70/18 or just under a 33. It also loses 1 mpg to the other models on the highway though...

Checked mine today. Mine with 2" level, 275/65/18, and the bumper plastic removed measures 34* to the skid plate on my bumper.

Watching TFL on YouTube. They're reviewing the 2017 Ford Raptor

you see the following:
  • 30" Approach
  • 22" Breakover
  • 23" Departure

Thought I'd google what my truck is and found this post. I still haven't found the stock angles. Free bump because I'd love to see some answers to this question as well.

17.9 approach, 21 break over, 23.3 departure and 8.9 ground clearance are stock silverado 4wd numbers (very close as break over can vary).

Sounds like mid to upper 20's approach angle with a removed or trimmed air dam, inch larger tire and 1.5-2.5 level doesn't sound out of the realm.

I took some quick measurements of mine (2.5" level, 35's):

33 Approach

28 Departure

I measured the approach angle on my 2014 crew cab 4x4 this evening.  Stock, with the air dam removed, the approach angle is 20 degrees.
