Just ordered these from MarylandSpeed - can't say enough about their customer service! I currently have an Airad MIT on my 6.2L and I don't plan on tuning but just keeping it stock. I'll have the truck dyno'd before and after install so I can provide accurate performance improvement results. Should sound good, right?

Going to have to more than likely tune for the increase airflow and exhaust flow, just so you don't run lean and start melting stuff

You're probably going to want to tune it. You may get a CEL even with the green cats. Also, your trims are going to be pretty much out of whack.

Also could create some damage to the motor. If not tuning cancel the order, spend a little money and remove the stock muffler, give you some noise..

Exactly. Just information you should consider. Exhaust & intake is generally fine but once you start adding headers you don't really have a choice, you could potentially run very lean and blow your engine if you don't tune for them. You're choice though. $400-600 tune or $10,000+ engine.

It's your truck and money, we're just trying to help.

 

Hey if you want to drop $3k on head to tail exhaust and not get the most out of it, go right ahead. The cat back is nothing more then a noise maker albeit a preference to all. The intake will let more air in and the headers let more air out, but the ECM won't/can't calibrate the way it should to give you a benefit of the mods you have installed.

 

On top of all that you could damage the motor, but hey it's your truck.

My truck leaned out more than I was comfortable with just the MIT. Headers could lean to the point where you MAF is unable to compensate given the stock fuel trims.

The recommendation to tune isn't being made JUST because you are leaving power on the table, but also because your closed loop fuel is going to be a little more risky than most are willing to accept.

Prepare for it to be loud! I put the 14866 on my 6.2L a few weeks ago with no headers and man it barks...especially when you first start it. I don't even like to get on it hard around town anymore because I'm afraid I'm going to get a ticket.

Went to my friends last night to watch football and parked on the street, left at midnight and went I left, woke everyone up in the house nextdoor!

Absolutely love the sound though

Not quite a 'rookie' there buddy...

 

No quite doing it like a seasoned modder either. You are going to get pre catalyst efficiency codes that will need to be tuned out, no way around that at all. Changing the position of the cats can affect the warm up times before the cats start to work, that will trip the post cat efficiency codes as well. As said as well, even though the truck uses a MAF and it has some ability to correct fueling for airflow changes it cant compensate for a set of headers.

 

If you are going to baby it all the time you will be fine, but if you plan on stepping on it you are going to be risking some damage to the motor for sure. I bet install only you will only pick up around 10rwhp with the change and will be leaving around 25rwhp on the table from not tuning.

 

As said though, your truck. I don't make the payment on it so it doesn't bother me what you do to it.

It's funny how the GM Performance Engineers I spoke with didn't have an issue with this - they do it all the time.

 

Ohh yeah, also had a good conversation with the head mechanic at my local dealership and he didn't mind it at all.

 

You guys are so brainwashed on these forums by vendors. Anyone can sit there and put out a 'tune.' Hell, the majority of the 'tunes' out there are open source!

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
