Oil pressure hitting max when flooring

Hey guys. Cannot find any topics with explanation to this so going to ask the question. Have a '15 sierra with the 5.3. Last night was going 60kph and floored it to pass a car and when I looked at the gauges the oil pressure was sitting at max high. Tried again to see if it would do it again and it did.

Now this is the first vehicle I owned that ever did that. No warning lights came on but should I be worried?

Thanks,

I am curious too. Had this happen to me once as well.

If I'm not mistaken these trucks have a two stage oil pump. What you saw is normal operation best I can tell.

That is correct. When the RPM's get over about 4k you'll see the pressure spike up. Scared me at first until a buddy of mine explained it.

Yup, two stage oil pump. I believe it's 3.5k rpms is when it hits the second stage, supposed to help oil flow over the rockers and such, helps move the oil faster

The oil pressure can go very high, especially if the engine isn't fully up to temperature. GM is also one of the last manufacturers where the gauges actually mean anything- Ford's are just glorified idiot lights and read "normal" with like anything above 15 PSI. So if you came from something else you probably had dumbed-down gauges.

Ok that's good to know. Wonder if this is going to arm the gaskets in the long run.

Gone fishing: that was a good read on the truck.
