Windshield - New Truck - Just Cracked

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I recently bought a 16 Denali a couple of months ago. Went out this morning and the windshield is cracked. I've crawled all over this thing looking for starting point for the crack, such as an impact or some other abnormality in the glass. I don't see anything and I've worked my way all along this crack both by feel and by magnifying glass.

This stupid thing goes from the edge of the glass, right in the center, down about 8 eight inches (which is behind the cameras/rear view) and then shoots off towards the driver side for about 18 inches.

Is there any argument that can be made with the dealer that this is a warranty item or defect in manufacturing? What might cause something like this outside of the obvious road debris?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

you might have an argument, I've never seen a crack without any sort of impact site

Same thing happened to me last year. I stopped at a traffic light and the crack formed before my eyes (from left edge to right edge). I just paid the $200 deductible and got another OEM windshield. At the time, my truck at about 5000 km on it.

I would certainly try for a warranty claim. Your chances of a free install are better than if you don't ask!

Everything should be covered for the first year or 12k for imperfections including that windshield.

When they say no, just call your insurance. It is covered under your comprehensive coverage.

Depends where you live and your insurance. Up here I know very few people that have windshield coverage in their policy, mine definitely doesn't.

I have comprehensive with $0 deductible and I have gotten at least 5 windshields for "free" in the past 15 years.

(I say free because i'm paying the premium anyway)

I've had my '16 Silverado 1500 for a few months now, and during the summer when it's been really hot, I'd get in the truck and blast the AC..like I'd do with every other vehicle I've ever owned. I'm guessing it was the rapid change in temperature, but every day as I was driving home I'd constantly hear cracking sounds coming from the windshield..very distinct, glass break-y sounds..but have yet to see a crack..I'm guessing when winter rolls around and I start needing the defrost I will end up having the same thing happen to me. Doesn't seem like the best quality windshield.

I cannot speak for Canada but in the states it is included in your comprehensive coverage even if you do not have "glass coverage" Now what the deductible is could make it not worth going through insurance but it is an option here.

Probably had a tiny crack on the edge of the glass hidden under the trim. They could have dropped a entire crate of windshields with a forklift at the factory or had a bad fixture where the softener came off and scoured the edge of the glass. What is your trucks build date and plant of manufacture? An obvious manufacturing flaw that will be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty.......

I would sure try warranty at dealer.

If that fails call the glass shops and ask if they will pay deductible, a lot do, or half of it hear in MI.

This is not true in all states. I had to change insurance companies and my windshield wasn't covered under my policy. I had to pay extra for that. I guess I could have filed a normal claim but seeing how my deductible was more than the cost of a new windshield, that wasn't going to happen.

Luckily, my classmate runs a glass shop and replaced it for a me.
