but how do two seals help? Something gets past the first seal when fueling it will fall past the second seal into the tank

I guess that’s possible with either a cap or capless system.

Morenar, thank you for this info! I brought it to my dealership on a Saturday and they have the 2017 cap arriving by Tuesday for me. At first they were jerks about it though, saying nothing was coming up with my VIN. I pressed the issue a few times until they agreed to just open a repair order, make the order, and then close the repair order. They said the only reason they were doing it was because they had the part number. Thanks again.

Is GM providing this for free? Do I just call and tell the dealer I want one of these?

It should be free while under warranty; mine was. Having a dealership order one for you without going there in person might be hard. If no one helps you with this, you can try the Buick/GMC/Cadillac dealership that I went to in Woodland Hills. I worked with Sam Macuk in the service depart. It's about a 30 mile drive from Camarillo though, might not be worth it unless you find yourself on this side of the hill one day.

I’m curious to see if in fact they provide it for free. GM has given it a part number and a price. It’s more of an accessory rather than a warranted item. Please let us know. I picked one up on eBay for $15 with free shipping. I’d spend close to that just driving to the dealer to get one.

I'll let you know how it goes. If they charge me, I'll just get some sort of cap from Home Depot for $2 or so.

I've been thinking that looks like a standard filler neck someone left the cap off and door open...but, hey; anything to stir the pot.

I just picked up the gas cap. At first they were going to charge me because the original service advisor wasn't there to say it was free. I explained the situation and they understood and gave it to me for free.

If I had to do it all over again, I would just buy some sort of cap from Home Depot. This new cap locks, so that's a plus for some, but it also means you have to unlock it every time you fill up (another key on your key ring or floating around in the glove box). You can cut the lock off the cap if you don't want to deal with the locking feature. Here's the biggest design flaw, though. There is a tab on the cap where it touches the base of the filler neck that gets stuck under the plastic housing that surrounds the whole gas tank area. I actually had to break this tab off.

So it boils down to this, if you want the locking feature, get this cap. If you just want to cover the filler area, buy something from Home Depot (some sort of soft block rubber cap made for PVC pipes).

So any ideal on what the difference is between the 2017 cap and 2018 cap wouldn't think there be much change in the filler.

Picked up GM's locking gas cap from my dealer. Because I had complained about the potential dirt and water problems with the capless system they gave it to me for free. In any event I took it home and tried it on my truck. It seemed to fit snugly but when I went to take it off, that was another story. The top seems to get caught on the inside of the gas cap and it can be a struggle to get it off. I guess this was GM's idea of a quick inexpensive fix from complaining customers. I will have to make some modifications on this cap to make it fit properly for removal....
