Not liking the capless gas cap system on 2017s

If you were that concerned about not having a cap over the fill neck, red neck it. Go to Home Depot and buy an 1 ½" plumbing gen cap. It's basically a rubber cap that you can fit onto the end of pipes as a temporary means of capping the line. It tightens on with hose clamp. Remove hehose clamp and just push it on. I don't have a capless truck so I am guessing on the size of the opening. You may be able to find something smaller. But at least if you get the rubber one you push it on and pull it off. If no one is having issues with this system and manufacturers are still implementing it after a number of years, it must be working.

Last time I checked it was illegal to pump your own gas in New Jersey and Oregon...but it's safe for some 16 year old kid to pump it for you...

I wish it was like that everywhere. I miss sitting in my nice warm truck while some other poor schmuck pumps my gas while it's 0 degrees and 20kt winds.

The cover you describe is already there on some versions...it's built right into the access door. Closing the door puts a cover over the fill neck/flapper.

Especially if you're not setup like a typical car...think: auxiliary tank.

2) Possible dust/dirt making it's way into the tank when filling up, enough fill ups, can/will get enough dirt in the tank to make issues...

 

Now, for the big question, what do I need to convert my 2017 Silverado CCSB back to a cap system, so I can buy a locking cap and be happy?

Yeah, so some lazy or pi$$ed-off attendant bangs the filling nozzle into the sheet metal making a dent, stretches the nozzle bending back the filler door screwing up the alignment, fails to secure the cap properly and you get the engine light or just spills gas into the filler cavity so you have to roll down the windows of your nice warm truck for the next few miles so you don't choke on the fumes.

I believe Ford offers a locking cover for their system so I'm sure eventually GM will too. Not that I'd ever buy one. People worry too much. lol

GM needs a locking gas cap for the cap-less fuel system, Ford sure seems to have their ducks in a row much better than GM does for their trucks that I have seen by far.

 

Another thing I have noticed since buying this new GM especially when purchasing accessories.

 

Ford accessories you purchase and you install.

 

GM accessories you purchase, you assemble, you drill holes in your new truck, then you install.

At least have a locking door for the fuel fill... But that would not keep the dust and road fine out, unless it had a seal on it of some sort.

What ever the reason for this new style gas cap the truth is we will all deal with it at some time IMO.

For me, it's not so much the fuel stealing, it's the idiot that comes by fit no reason and puts something in there besides free fuel... Say you have your favorite teams sticker on your window, some rival fan decides he's going to be a hero, and add something to your fuel. You will not know until it's too late...
