This is federal law and all cars will have it by 2018 I believe. My 2012 focus had it and never had an issue.

Where did you hear that his is federal law? I'm curious to see if their is any explanation for it from the government.

I don't know the reason, but I guess I can't think that there have been enough people coming to the dealer with a loose gas cap to make GM switch to capless. Maybe driving without a cap, but I would think that would be people with a POS that don't care about it doing that.

I can't find anything hinting at this being required but believe it or not, all these regulations do have explanations, they just tend to be a bit of a reach at times. Ford has been using this since like 2008 so I feel like it's reasonably proven tech by now.

Like the above member posted about his car has a flap to keep water out, I'm guessing there is a hole somewhere to allow the water to drain out so it doesn't just drop in nice you go to fuel up.

 

Idk how reliable those spring loaded flaps are. Would be a PITA to fix if it ever broke

Put one on a bale bed work truck and see how it works in a year... AFM has been in use on the GM's since 2007 and I don't want that feature either, haha.

I can't remember where I heard/read it but it was a couple years ago. I can't find anything on it now either so maybe it was rescinded.

It's a Ford thing. My brother drives Fords and his has been like for the last few trucks he's had. I never figured out why is was supposed to be a good idea but I'd just chalk it up to the "Ford Mentality of One Upsmanship" and move on but now us GM guys are stuck with it!!!

 

You can buy a cap to plug it. Don't know why anyone thought this was a good idea.

My wife's 2012 Charger has it, and for the first year or so, I was concerned about debris or water. Four years later, not a single problem with it, and its quite handy to only have to push the button to open it and then close the door and be on your way. It can be done right and not have a single problem. Although, at this point, I don't trust GM to be able to do it right, but to do it cheap.

Well, with all the nanny state nonsense that keeps coming out, it is becoming very clear that I will not be buying any new pickup. My 2015 will have to be my last. Will have to make a condition to any dealer before a sale... if it has a capless system, remove it and make a capped system or no sale. If I ever am so desperate in need of a new vehicle and there is no way around not having a capless system, will have to find a work around. I understand some liking this sort of thing, but I have to travel several miles of dusty gravel roads to and from the house just to get to the nearest highway. Already lot of dirt builds up in the fuel fill area. Some stupid capless nonsense is sure to let in some dirt and debris. We need to have OEM's that actually make pickups and not luxury cars trying to imitate pickups.

I know countless people with newer Fords who have never had an issue, same with Chrysler and their capless system. The system is proven, no dealer will "convert" a truck for you either. It's an emissions component.

Then I guess I would convert it. Still, I am pretty sure that the outcry from the farmer/rancher/construction crowd ought to help. But then, the OEM's generally have forgotten that segment of their base. It shows in their pickup design and offerings. At least I won't have to worry about it for a while. By then, the long term results will be known.

 

The system is "proven"? By whom and in what way? Has it been proven to withstand have dirt caked on it and not letting any of that thru when a person fills up their tank? Kinda one of those torture test examples that are normal out here in fly over country. Well considering that no one in my area, that is, all the farmer/rancher types that live and work around me including myself, have even seen one of these capless systems in our pickups, let alone experienced how "proven" it is. Just because it has worked out ok for the city crowd doesn't mean that it is "proven". We have all seen how "proven" some of the things the OEM's have done actually worked out over time.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
