Does the remote start app (gmc app) require the vehicle to be locked to remote start it like the key chain remote does?

Nope, it will automatically lock it first and then start it for you. You can also start it twice within the first 10 minutes to extend the running time to 20 minutes like you can with the remote.

Is there anyway to leave the rear defroster on when you turn the car off, so when you use the remote start and begins to defrost your frozen windows

There's a setting in the radio menus to turn on the rear defrost when you start it with the remote or app

Yes.

 

Starting the Engine Using Remote Start

1. Press and release Q.

2. Immediately press and hold / until the turn signal lamps flash or for at least four seconds.

When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will turn on.

The doors will be locked and the climate control system may come on.

 

The vehicle cannot be remote

started if:

. The key is in the ignition.

. The hood is not closed.

. There is an emission control system malfunction and the malfunction indicator lamp is on.

I think my 2015 requires that you press the lock button and release, then press and hold the remote start button for 4 seconds. In other words it won't start unless the door is locked. Pretty sure you can unlock it after it starts and it won't automatically relock if that helps.

What happens when the timer runs out? Unlocked and shut-off or ??

Actually if you do it a 2nd time it just restarts the 10 minutes. so if you wait 5 minutes and do it a 2nd time, then that's a total of 15 minutes.

Rumor has it that if you do too many remote starts it will wake up the AI and the truck will attempt to "TAKE OVER THE WORLD"

I would actually like to know how the software logic of the remote start system is setup. I do NOt think my truck locks itself back if I remote start and unlock the doors but not 100% sure on that as i have never tried it to see........I bet someone will find the logic and post it soon though because there are a lot of sharp and inquisitive minds here.
